My dog cries when pooping. Could it be anal gland pain or impaction?

Thank you for submitting your question Haily. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She could have a sore anal gland due to an infection or impaction. If this is not the case, she could be constipated or even have arthritis in her hips or lower back making it painful to defecate. Her veterinarian will carefully examine her and determine the source of he problem. From there, treatment can be started to make her more comfortable. I hope this information helps!

Poor guy. The only thing you can do at home here is to cleanse the area antiseptablly with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water or Chlorhexidine solution 3 or 4% diluted until a light blue mixture. If there is a lot of hair there, you can also gently cut away the hair to prevent further fecal matter to get stuck. If the area looks severely swollen, painful, or infected, then the best thing to do moving forward would be to get him seen and treated by your vet. It sounds like he is ingesting a lot of hair, so it would be wise to remove the source of his ingestion and either have him groomed more frequently and/or brushed at home more frequently to limit how much he is ingesting. If he still can't poop on his own, then yes he should see a vet to get an enema and remove all the stuck feces that are in his colon and provide him some relief. It could be his anal glands, he could have an infection or an impaction, i would recommend taking him to your vet to get it checked ASAP. if the anal glands are infected he will need a course of antibiotics, if they are impacted they will need to be manually emptied.

Your dog could have hip or back problems that make it painful to posture to defecate and would also make it hurt when her tail is manipulated. It could also be infected or inflamed anal glands. This condition is very painful and makes it difficult to defecate or even move. Without treatment, the gland may rupture, causing a open wound on your pet's rear that will require wound care and antibiotics as well as some pain relief. I recommend getting your pet seen by your vet. They will examine your pet, possibly do some x-rays and labwork and be able to give you a better idea of what is going on and how best to treat it.

Hi there. Expressing the anal glands is not overly painful unless they are badly infected, and does not normally require sedation. But it can definitely be uncomfortable, so it's not unusual for pets to vocalize when it's done - just like for other minor procedures like vaccinations, nail trims, or blood draws. No, it is not safe to give any over-the-counter pain medications such as Tylenol or ibuprofen to dogs. If this is a common problem for your dog, you could ask your veterinarian about having some type of pain medication on hand at home for these situations.

In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.

It could be that the anal glands are inflamed from being full or from the pressure of being expressed. If it continues call your Vet they may just prescribe something over the phone or want to recheck him. I usually prescribe a steroid taper for things like this. Good luck!
