My chihuahua is coughing and throwing up water. Is it kennel cough?

Coughing can be a symptom of many issues in our pets and some are more serious then others. The cough can stem from something occurring with the heart/vessels, lungs, airways, upper throat, or inside the chest/outside the lungs. There can be parasite causes (such as heartworms, lung worms, etc.), infectious causes (bacteria, viruses; unfortunately the Bordetella vaccine does not always prevent kennel cough as it is typically a complex of viral +/- bacterial causes, although typically there is exposure to other dogs in the history for this ailment), inhaled foreign material as you suggest, airway change (like tracheal (large airway) collapse), disease of the lung (such as bronchitis or pneumonia), and several other causes in various areas (inflammation, etc.). Is Stella otherwise normal (eating normally, playing with good energy)? If so this is a good sign. If you feel like she is otherwise not feeling well in association with the cough or the cough continues/worsens or is moist or productive it would be best to have her evaluated by your family vet. That way he or she can listen to her heart and lungs. A chest x-ray may also be recommended as an initial step. Hello! It would be helpful to know how long Ellie has had this cough, if she is vaccinated, and if she has been around any other dogs. At her young age, I would be worried about her contracting something contagious. Kennel cough usually runs its course without problems, but sometimes can progress to pneumonia. It is similar to a human common cold. However, canine influenza and canine distemper can both present in young pups as upper respiratory signs and both of these viral infections require treatment from a veterinarian. Signs of a serious infection include: Green nasal/eye discharge, lethargy, not wanting to eat Hereditary non-infectious causes of a cough could be collapsing trachea or a heart defect. I would recommend seeing your vet, but calling first to let them know your pup may be contagious. Your vet will listen to her heart and lung sounds, then possible recommend x-rays to find out what is causing her cough. I hope you find this helpful! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Kennel cough is an upper respiratory infection which sometimes can even affect the lower respitatory system or lungs. It is sometimes due to bacterial or viral infections. This is a relatively common disease in puppies especially if not vaccinated. It is contagious and usually dogs get it from other affected dogs. Coughing can of course happen due to other pulmonary conditions like pneumonia for example. I recommend that you have Naja evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may take thoracic radiographs and may prescribe antibiotics. Good luck and have a good day!

He could have gotten kennel cough while he was boarded, which is not unusual in situations where dogs are kept in fairly close quarters. I recommend getting your dog in to see your vet as he may need a prescription for cough suppressant and/or antibiotics to help him recover more quickly and easily.

It could be a respiratory infection, it could be a collapsing trachea, it could be kennel cough, or it could be something more serious like heart disease. Hello, sorry to hear about Cleo. This could definitely indicate kennel cough, however, you should have this confirmed with your veterinarian. Other causes, especially since she has vomited is that she could have developed pneumonia. Please have her evaluated by her veterinarian to confirm she does not have pneumonia.
