Why is my dog coughing and breathing hard? Could it be heart disease?

Poor girl. She could have congestive heart disease, cancer, cushings disease or any kind of organ enlargement in her belly. I would recommend starting with a good vet exam and then possible radiographs and bloodwork to get her checked out and hopefully find the underlying cause for her symptoms. Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. in Tray's case it sounds a lot like a heart problem, i recommend taking him to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated, an xray will be require to confirm this and several medications will be prescribed.

I am sorry to hear about your dog. This lesion could be an insect bite, an area of bacterial or fungal infection, or growth. Without seeing it in person it is difficult to distinguish between these. The coughing is much more concerning and I would recommend having her examined as soon as possible if she is having ongoing coughing and difficulty breathing. Some conditions, such as heart disease, can cause coughing that is worse at night when the pet is laying down, so I would want to examine her, listen to her heart and lungs, and take an x-ray of her chest to determine just why she is coughing. Heart disease is not common in a 9 month old dog, but we would also want to check for things like congenital diaphragmatic hernias which could cause problems when she is laying down, or infections of the respiratory tract.

It varies from dog to dog just like in people. Some people rarely cough and other are constantly coughing with heart disease. Your vet will be able to tell a lot just from an exam - listening to her heart and lungs with a stethoscope. If you don't want to take her to the vet then all you can do is monitor her. This can also be caused by lung disease, a mass, or a foreign body in the throat - heart failure typically presents as rapid breathing and coughing, and usually develops over time. Poor Bentley! Given his age, I would be concerned there could be something seriously wrong causing the symptoms such as heart disease. Heart disease can be common in senior dogs.
