My dog is coughing after Trazodone. What can I do until Monday?

Poor Dixie! Unfortunately, by law we are not permitted to give any specific dosing recommendations without an exam - but I can tell you that doxycycline is not likely to be helpful in this case, since the coughing is due to airway irritation from the smoke rather than a bacterial infection. If she seems to be breathing okay and acting normal otherwise, you can try bringing her into the bathroom with you with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity often help to soothe irritation and relieve symptoms in cases like this. You can also try giving her a small amount of honey several times a day to help soothe her throat. If there is no improvement by tomorrow morning, I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam - she may need prescription anti-inflammatory medication or cough suppressants to treat the cough.

Hello, and thank you for your question. If Lacy is only coughing once or twice at night, you can ask your vet about trying a cough suppressant for the night time only. However, if she is coughing frequently at night, I'd also want to rule out heart disease as an underlying cause. Coughing due to heart disease often happens during rest, as fluid accumulates in their lungs when they are lying on their sides. Chest x-rays would be necessary to rule this out. For dogs with collapsing trachea that cough regularly at all hours, you can ask your vet about using a bronchodilator, and/or inhaled steroids, which get the medicine directly into her lungs where she needs it, with minimal absorption into the rest of her body, in turn minimizing side effects of steroids. Check out the Aerodawg, which is an inhaler designed just for dogs. However, as stated earlier, if her coughing is minimal, just a cough suppressant at night may be enough. In addition, switching to a harness instead of a collar can be very helpful, as it minimizes pressure on the trachea when the dog is pulling on the leash. I would not recommend giving him anything over the counter for the cough as it's probably not going to help much and human medications are generally not safe for dogs. if the cough becomes severe he will need antibiotic and strong anti coughing meds, if that happens take him to the vet in order to get the medications, otherwise the condition should resolve within a couple weeks without treatment.

That's not normal at all. Try offering him some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice soaked in gently warmed, low sodium chicken broth. If he refuses to eat that, have him seen by his vet in the morning. If you are very concerned, you can take him into an ER vet now.

Yes he should be fine. I would recommend just waiting until the morning to give another dose. Trazadone and tramadol can both cause sedation so please monitor for signs of severe sedation. If you notice any vomiting,diarrhea or severe sedation I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic.

I would be concerned that there is still swelling, potentially irritating the trachea or throat if Apollo is also now coughing and the hives haven't resolved after two days of home treatment. If this continues or worsens it would be best to seek veterinary care to have Apollo examined and treated with a strong medication to help stop the allergic reaction, especially if he is having swelling of the face or neck, or is having trouble breathing.
