My dog is coughing after grooming. Is it kennel cough or hairball?

Coughing could be caused by several different things. The source of the cough is the most important thing to determine - meaning is it primarily a respiratory problem or a cardiac problem. Without doing an exam on Bruno it is impossible for me to know what the cause of his cough is. However, I would assume that since he hacked up a hairball he may just have some inflammation/irritation in his throat. If this is the case it should go away within a day or so and you should not need to treat him with anything. If the cough persists for more than 2 days then I would recommend taking him in to the vet so the cause of the cough can be determined. Once it is, your vet can recommend a specific treatment. I'm glad that you contacted your local vet already - even if they don't have availability today, I recommend scheduling the earliest opening they have to get Louis examined. With his history of going to doggy daycare, his age, the comment from your vet that they've been seeing other cases recently, and Louis' symptoms, this sounds like it may be kennel cough. Until Louis is seen by your vet, keep him away from other dogs as he is likely contagious. Kennel cough can be caused by either a virus or a bacteria, but your vet may decide to start him on an antibiotic if they suspect it may be a bacterial cause such as bordetella. As long as Louis is acting bright and happy at home, and eating normally, then this isn't an emergency and can wait until your vet is available. However, if at any point you notice Louis becoming lethargic, his breathing becomes exaggerated or labored, or if he loses his appetite, then you should bring him in to an emergency clinic if your primary vet can't fit him in sooner, to make sure he's not developing something more concerning such as a secondary pneumonia. There are other things that can cause coughing in dogs, such as parasites, allergies, and heart problems, but I would rate these much lower on the list of concerns. Hope this helps!

This could be an infection such as kennel cough or pneumonia. Coughing can be caused by many different conditions including heart disease, collapsing trachea, infectious tracheitis (kennel cough) and pneumonia (fluid in the lungs). I would be concerned about a bulldog coughing after known vomiting, as they are at a higher risk of aspirating (fluid from the stomach going down the trachea and into the lungs instead of coming out the mouth or back into the stomach). I would recommend having Valentino rechecked, and discuss x-rays with your vet to see if there are signs of aspiration pneumonia. However, if Valentino is only coughing a tiny amount, and is otherwise normal, eating/drinking, playing, running around normally, then he likely doesn't need antibiotics as some aspiration pneumonias are sterile (no bacteria present). If the coughing is continuous, or any continued vomiting, or if Valentino is lethargic, weak, not eating, and not acting himself, or has any signs of trouble breathing, then get him to a vet immediately. Hi and thanks for posting. Coughing can have a variety of causes- respiratory infections, allergies, bronchitis among others. Licking a leg may indicate an allergy or can be a sign of pain. I would recommend Blu see his veterinarian soon for an exam and further evaluation. Your vet may recommend x-rays to get a better look at his lungs and legs. He may need antibiotics, pain medication, or other medications depending on what the vet's diagnosis is. I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A honking sounding cough with some gagging is a very typical sign of a condition called collapsing trachea. This is condition of the airway where it collapses down when they try to breath. This would be unrelated to the rake incident, but the rake incident might have stressed Gizmo to the point of an attack or episode where this collapsing trachea has become evident. It usually only flares up when they are stressed or breathing heavy. Another possible cause is kennel cough, once again unrelated to the rake incident but the stress could have caused a flare-up. This causes a hacking cough that is persistent. The other option is that the CPR episode caused trauma or inflammation to the airway or neck. Either way, the best thing to do would be to have a check up with a vet to see if some of these other underlying diseases are present, so you can treat (in terms of kennel cough or irritation of the trachea), or prevent future episodes (in terms of kennel cough). If the coughing has improved, the best thing to do in the mean-time would be to keep Gizmo quiet, comfortable, and rested, and avoid any activities where he would get excited or stressed. If he is still having trouble breathing please go to a vet right away as these episodes can spiral quickly and end up with a blocked airway all together, which can be fatal. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Jackie. Many states right now are experiencing outbreaks of respiratory problems in dogs. All of us in the profession are always worried about canine flu outbreaks. I would advise that if the condition worsens or doesn't resolve, have your veterinarian evaluate Jackie. There are many causes of coughing and having a thorough history would help narrow that down. Of course kennel cough, allergies, things in the air that are irritants, etc are all possible including many others. Again, with everything going on now across the United States, I would advise a trip to your vet's office with her. They can evaluate her and then advise some treatment or diagnostic testing to screen for a cause. They may advise fecal tests, blood tests, x-rays, or other tests to determine a cause.
