My dog coughs, sneezes, spits brown mucus. Vet says AC. Is it serious?

Cough in dogs can be with primarily respiratory or cardiac in nature. The first step to treating the cough is determine where the problem is originating. Coughs that are primarily respiratory in nature can be due to infectious causes (like lung worms, or bacterial, viral, or fungal infections) or due to airway disease (like asthma or a collapsing trachea). Coughs that are due to cardiac (heart) issues include things like pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) and heartworm disease. My best recommendation is for you to take Chester in to your vet to be checked out. Usually a physical exam performed by your vet can distinguish between the two causes. Poor pup. If the coughing continues, then your puppy likely has an upper airway infection, in which case you want to get this seen by your veterinarian. But if this is just an isolated incident that does not repeat itself, Bentley likely just got some kind of irritation to his airway from either an aerosolized irritant or foreign material. This could be an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough , but could also be a sign of heart disease, especially if Chico is an older dog. Another very likely possibility is that Chico has a collapsed trachea. You will need to take Chico to your vet for an exam and x-rays (which will rule out collapsed trachea and lung edema caused by congestive heart failure). Your vet;s exam will also detect any problems with the heart, that may be causing the cough. Please cschedule an appointment with your vet soon.

Since it has been several weeks with no improvement, Mocha should be physically examined by your veterinarian for a complete workup. Chest x-rays should be done to assess the lungs and heart. If indicated, an echocardiogram can be done to further assess cardiac architecture and function. Blood and fecal samples can be submitted to test for parasites. A sputum sample can also be submitted to test for infection (bacterial or fungal). Any of these conditions can be the underlying cause for the symptoms described.
