Can CoQ10 delay heart disease in dogs prone to the condition?

Unfortunately, this Coq10 will not prevent her from getting heart disease. There's no harm in giving it to her, but as you've said, the cavalier King Charles spaniel is prone to heart disease genetically. Supplements do not change her genetics, but you can help her heart health by making sure she isn't obese and has plenty of exercise.

Supplements are usually unnecessary as long as you are feeding a formulated dog food. There are various supplements that have shown mixed results about preventing certain diseases and helping with treatment with certain diseases, but the scientific evidence is not enough (despite a great deal of research with some supplements) for me to recommend an owner to give supplements to a healthy dog. The CoQ10 is a more recently studied supplement that does show promise for certain conditions, but again, the evidence is lacking enough that I wouldn't recommend it be given regularly to prevent certain conditions. The CoQ10 supplements and other ones are usually rather safe though, so I can't say it will hurt to give them. I would recommend consulting with your vet before you do in case Gerald has any conditions that would contraindicate their use and so you can get a precise dose for Gerald. No, higher doses of fish oil will not help prevent heart disease. Doubling up her fish oil can actually have detrimental effects on your dog's health, including interfering with wound healing and interfering with the inflammatory response of the immune system. To be honest if a dog is genetically prone to developing heart disease, there is nothing to prevent that from happening. If it's in her genes, supplements will not change genetic expression. I would not give your dog double doses of fish oil.

There are many medications which can be used to support a failing heart and should be used alongside diuretics in order to help support the function of the heart, reduce fluid build up in the lungs and abdomen and control blood pressure if required. Unfortunately, no cure is available and medications should be adjusted as Zoe's condition changes; many dogs can live for months-years with a heart condition depending on the severity of other health complications which can also occur as they age. Without a full history of all her complaints and recent tests it is impossible to assess her medium-long term prognosis

Diabetes in dogs is often idiopathic (no underlying cause) and is just a genetic predisposition in dogs. It can sometimes be caused by eating fatty foods and being overweight often, but more often than not its genetic and breed specific in dogs. Cat diabetes is more often caused by being overweight. Since this is a supplement, then long term effects are minimal, but if wondering you should call the manufacturer of the supplement to ask for a list. Each manufacturer is different, so its best to go to the source with questions. : ) If your pet has an underlying cardiac disease, then that disease can lead to high blood pressure, so its best to get Chhutki's pressures checked regularly to determine if she needs additional regulating medication(s). A heart supplement wouldn’t hurt but she probably doesn’t necessarily need one, particularly if she does not have documented heart disease. If you choose to use a supplement I would recommend VetriScience Cardio. You should always check with your vet before starting any supplement.

Royal Canin diets are all formulated with pre-biotics which help support a health gut bacteria. You could add in an additional probiotic but you may not see a huge amount of benefits BUT it will not hurt anything. Purina makes a very nice probiotic called FortiFlora and that would be the one I recommend. The Bio-Cardio may be beneficial but to the best of my knowledge, no testing has been done to know for sure if this is effective or not. Royal Canin does make a diet specific for Cavaliers that has additives for heart heath. They also make a diet for pets with heart disease or even just heart murmurs. They have done some studies indicating that these diets do impact heart health. Your fatty acid supplement does help to maintain heart health through its natural anti-inflammatory properties.
