Why does my energetic dog have chronic diarrhea and lose weight?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | neutered | 6 years and 3 months old | 80 lbs

My Doberman has had rather persistent diarrhea basically most of his adult life. He still has lots and lots of energy, and seems to feel well all the time. However, he is a little thin, even at 80lbs (has a big frame). His vet doesn't seem to be too concerned and wanted me to keep in touch on the issue. However, I'd just like to know what some possible issues would be with it being basically and everyday occurrence. I've tried a variety of foods as well. Thanks!

Poor guy. He could have a number of things going on here that can cause chronic diarrhea and weight loss including: malabsorption, inflammatory bowel disease, an endocrine disorder, or even neoplasia (intestinal lymphoma) has to be considered. I would suggest starting with an abdominal ultrasound to evaluate the intestinal lining for any masses or abnormalities. I would also consider getting him on a hypoallergenic prescription diet such as Royal Canin hypoallergenic hp or Hill's Z/D. Many pets also respond to chronic antibiotics (Tylosin powder) to help manage their chronic colitis issues. Here is more information on Tylosin used for Chronic colitis in dogs. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A
