My dog has chronic bronchitis cough. What else can relieve symptoms?

A blood test may be able to indicate any infections present but the vast majority of cases do have a low grade infection due to the trauma and injury associated with prolonged coughing and do benefit from a course of antibiotics if unwell. I would also recommend a course of prednisone to settle the condition and allow the inflammation and irritation to reduce and natural antiinflammatories may be considered to try to maintain the condition thereafter. The side effects of steroids are generally dose and time related and short courses are of limited risk of side effects compared to the benefits produced

If the bronchitis is secondary to infection, then the antibiotics should resolve the infection. Once the infection is resolved, the inflammation should resolve as well. The "other medicines" may be anti inflammatory meds and possibly cough meds which will help relieve symptoms.

If the bronchitis is caused by a virus it can take up three weeks for the body to fight it. However if your dog still has breathing trouble I strongly suggest you take Mocha back to your vet for a recheck. You can help her breathe by taking her with you into the bathroom when you take a hot shower as the steam from the shower will help.

I would not recommend using an inhaler for kennel cough. An inhaler treats inflammation in the lungs and kennel cough causes inflammation in the upper airway. If the coughing has been going on for more than a couple days or if there are additional symptoms (lethargy, not eating, etc) I would recommend that DandyLion see a vet for further diagnosis. Additionally, albuterol can have effects that may be harmful in dogs.

First off, I am so sorry that you recently lost your husband! Please accept my condolences for your loss. I would not give Blaze any human antihistamines. In a senior dog like her, this labored breathing and cough could be caused by something serious such as cardiac disease, respiratory disease, or cancer. Human antihistamines would not treat these causes. I would have Blaze seen by a vet today or tomorrow for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, urinalysis, and x-rays. Doing these tests, the vet can diagnose what is causing Blaze's labored breathing and cough, and can discuss treatment options with you.

It looks like he is on quite the combination of medications to try and suppress the coughing. I personally do not find that the cough tabs help much. I have had great success using hydrocodone or butorphanol tablets. The albuterol is good for a bronchodilator. You might consider talking to your veterinarian about using a inhaler called flovent. Fluticasone might be a better option to use. I would talk to your veterinarian about these other options and see if this would work best for Maxx. So sorry that Mary is having this problem. Unfortunately, there really isn't anything over the counter that you should give her, especially without knowing the cause. She could have a problem with her heart and have some fluid in her lungs or have an infection, like pneumonia. If you are not able to take her to a vet than try to keep her as quiet as possible and keep her hydrated and eating. Other than that, she would need to see a vet to diagnose the problem and then prescribe medications to treat. If you have a vet that regularly treats her, you could call and see if he/she would prescribe a cough medication to see if that helps at all.
