My dog acts like he's choking in his sleep. What's wrong?

Poor guy. He may have a type of bronchitis or asthma. I would definitely recommend getting him seen by your vet and get some x-rays of his chest done to determine the underlying problem there. I would also try video taping one of his episodes to show your vet so that we can get clarity on what you are seeing at home, since most pets won't repeat the event while at the vet. Another possible thing this could be is a reverse sneeze. Look up reverse sneezing dogs on youtube to see if this is what Toby is doing. If he is having reverse sneezing episodes, then these are not of concern and are not life threatening. They are typically caused by mild allergies or irritation to the larynx. You can help Toby during these episodes by gently rubbing on his throat and offering him small amounts of water on your finger. If they become more frequent and start to impede on his quality of life, then you should visit your vet to rule out other undelrying causes that may require treatment. I hope that things work out for your pet Toby moving forward and hopefully these wheezing episodes are just normal reverse sneezing events. Take care!

If he is only making this noise while asleep I would not be too concerned about it. Just have your vet examine Deuce at some point to check his airway. He likely has a brachycephalic confirmation, which causes increased respiratory sounds when he is either excited or asleep. It could be Toffee had to cough because something in the environment was irritating his throat. I would keep an eye on him for now if he's ok. Should this honking sounds start again, I would have him seen by his vet. Best of luck.

Poor guy. If the coughing is lasting more than 12-24 hrs, then there is a good chance Toby has a bit of an upper respiratory infection (i.e. Kennel cough). I would highly recommend taking him in to your local vet to get treatment, which usually consists of a short course of antibiotics to clear things up. Pet vaccinated with the Bordetella vaccine once every 6-12 months are protected up to 87% from contracting URI's, so this would be best to do once Tobby is feeling better. : ) I hope that your fur baby feels better soon! Since your dog is an old dog this could be a sign of fluid in his lungs which in turn could signal a lung or heart condition or worse, a lung tumor. Usually dogs with a congestive heart condition cough while resting. I suggest you schedule an exam with your veterinarian. Fluid in the lungs can easily be treated and the heart can be supported with medication that will make it more effective.

Hello. So sorry to hear that Daddy is having this issue. Coughing can be due to many different things such as: 1. kennel cough 2. heart disease 3. collapsing trachea 4. foreign body 5. parasites (ie: lung worms, heartworms) 6. bronchitis/asthma 7. cancer 8. pneumonia I think you should get Daddy to your vet for an exam so you can get this figured out. Your dog may have an elongated soft palate that causes an intermittent obstruction of air flow. Usually it is self limiting and doesn’t cause issues but if this is happening consistently there is a surgery that can be performed to help open up the airway. I would recommend talking to your vet about the issue and having them perform an oral exam. They may recommend surgery. I hope this helps.
