My chihuahua/pug mix is pregnant. Will she need a C-section?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 14 lbs

My chihuahua/pug mix is in heat and accidentally mated with a yorkie/Pomeranian mix last week. They locked for about an hour. My female is 13-14lbs. And the male is around 7 or 8 lbs. I'm wondering if there is a good chance that my dog can have a healthy natural delivery. I have heard that chihuahuas tend to need csections but she is a chihuahua/pug mix. Please let me know what you think. Thank you.

Both chihuahuas and pugs are high secton risks - your vet may be able to advise further depending on her frame and width of pelvis but if you do not wish to breed her aborting the litter or neutering may also be possibilities.

If the male was the same size or smaller than her, there is a fair chance that the birth could happen naturally, but of course no guaranties. if the male was larger then the risks increase, in that case i personally think it would be a good idea to get her spayed ASAP.

Chihuahuas tend to have a lot of problems giving birth due to their small size, and frequently need c sections. Given her age and small size, I think it would be best for her safety to follow the recommendations and have her spayed. If you want to keep the puppies, you need to start saving in case she needs an emergency c section. Those can cost thousands. Best of luck.

Hello, it is difficult to predict wether or not she would need a c-section. Clues that would help determine if she may need a c-section include previous episodes of needing a c-section, being overweight, and having an abnormal external genitalia conformation. You could consult with a veterinary theriogenologist for a pre-breeding exam to determine if there are any abnormalities within her external genitalia or her overall health which would predispose her to complications with labor. That is not a general rule valid for everyone and, as far as my knowledge goes, there is no scientific studies to prove that. I can say that is definitively true that chihuahua often require c-section, regardless their age. I would suggest to have Jing checked during pregnancy to determine the exact number of puppies, their vitality and her condition and make sure everything runs smoothly. My Shih Tzu is pregnant by a big dog. Will she survive delivery?

If she’s pregnant she may need a C-section if the pups are too large to come out naturally. I recommend a veterinary exam and ultrasound to see if she’s pregnant and perhaps an X-ray when she’s close to delivering to see the size and number of pups. I would strongly suggest to keep her monitored during pregnancy as c-section may be needed to deliver the puppies. Radiographs at 40 days of pregnancy will be very useful to assess the size of the puppies and make sure they can be naturally delivered. Hi there, Breeding can be quite the undertaking and you're correct to have concerns. Chihuahua's have narrow birth canals and often need c sections to get their puppies out. I'm not sure how much she weighs, but a difficult birth certainly could occur. I would consider whether you want to take the risk of breeding and go from there. My small dog is pregnant by a big dog. Will she be okay?

Hello, I’m not sure if there was supposed to be a photograph of the male dog attached to this post or not. If you have a large male who breeds with a small female, there is always a concern that she will not be able to have the puppies and will need a C-section. Any small female dog who is having puppies should have radiographs done after day 45 to see how many babies are expected. If you do not want her to have a litter, I recommend calling the veterinarian and discussing getting her spayed ASAP. Some dogs can have a shot to stop the pregnancy but there can be some serious side effects to that. Getting her spayed will eliminate an accidental pregnancy in the future. Getting her spayed also has other health benefits and is recommended for any dog not intended for breeding. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions!
