Is chicken healthy for dogs, or are chicken allergies common in dogs?

I would consider a food that has an alternative source of protein from chicken since protein is the most common type of food allergy in dogs. Purina ProPlan has a lamb and rice dog food, so I recommend trying that food. I hope this helps!

No, do not give your dog milk. Dairy is never recommended to give to dogs because it causes GI upset. There are kibble diets that are formulated with proteins that aren't made from chicken, such as rabbit, lamb, duck, and beef. It is certainly possible that the food is the problem. I couldn't say what it is about that brand that is problematic, but some dogs simply do better with certain brands than others. If she has a chicken allergy, I would make sure that whatever brand of food you choose you check extremely carefully for ingredients, and may go as far as calling up the company. Sometimes they can sneak something like "poultry by product" in at the very end of the ingredient list and it is very easy to miss. There are also prescription diets available that are very low ingredient and generally safer for pets with dietary issues. Other issues that can cause gastrointestinal issues in dogs would include inflammatory or infectious diseases, immune-mediated diseases (such as IBD), certain cancers, liver disease, and a few other less common possibilities. If she hasn't already, it might be a good idea to obtain some blood work just to see if everything is checking out OK. Ultrasound and abdominal radiographs are also possibilities if you want to explore the problem in more detail.

Hi there. For dogs with food allergies, I always recommend feeding a prescription hypoallergenic diet such as Hills z/d or Purina HA if possible. With over-the-counter diets, cross contamination with other ingredients is common - so any of these foods may contain small amounts of chicken, even if this isn't listed as an ingredient. So depending on how sensitive Walker is, he could potentially react to almost any OTC food. A prescription hypoallergenic diet eliminates this risk, so you can be sure that he won't have a reaction :)

Cooked chicken bones are a bit more concerning than raw bones, as they are more likely to splinter as they pass through the gastrointestinal tract. Most bones (even cooked ones) can pass without a problem. Keep a close eye on Bonnie's overall energy level and appetite. Lethargy and inappetence can be associated with perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, as can vomiting or diarrhea, particularly if blood is present. WIth Bonnie's chicken allergy, I imagine that she's more likely to experience stomach upset with vomiting and diarrhea that may or may not be associated with the bones in the chicken breast. As Dr. Graben mentioned, she could also experience itchy skin due to her chicken allergy. If you notice any lethargy, loss of appetite, significant vomiting or diarrhea, or any blood in vomit or stool, then be sure to seek veterinary attention immediately. You can offer a bland diet of boiled lean ground beef or turkey, mixed with white rice for the next 5-7 days to try to give the chicken time to pass before mixing in her normal dog food over another 5-7 days. I tell clients they can try 2 different over the counter novel protein diets for 2-3 months each before trying a prescription hydrolyzed diet. A novel protein diet means the protein or meat is one that the dog or cat has never eaten before. Only pick one at a time. Examples are Venison, duck, fish, rabbit with green pea, sweet potato, etc. The animals need to eat this diet exclusively, meaning no table scraps, treats or bones, rawhides, greenies or pig ears. The only treats you can give the pet are ones that contain the new protein. You need to give the diet 2-3 months before trying a different protein. There are prescription novel protein diets as well. Hydrolyzed diets are prescription only. The protein is broken down to a very small protein size that isn't recognized as as an allergen by the immune system. Examples are: Hill's z/d, Royal Canin HP and Purina HA. If you find the correct protein that your dog is allergic too then she should only give that diet. Some dogs have food allergies and environmental allergies or atopy. So sometimes food isn't always the perfect fix. But if it is then yes it can help prevent skin and ear infections as long as they don't get anything else to eat that they may be allergic too. I hope this helps! Good luck!
