Dog chewed off a wart, leaving a hole. How do I treat the wound?

You can continue disinfection at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily for the next 4 days. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. It is best not bandage as the healing will be much quicker. If the lesion do not resolve in 4 days time a check up will be needed as antibiotics may be required. Poor guy. I can understand your concern here. Apply firm pressure periodically with a clean sterile gauze from your local pharmacy as you cleanse the area antiseptically with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water or Chlorhexidine solution 3% diluted into a light blue mixture. This should be done for the first day to help prevent infection. And don’t allow your pet to roll around in the dirt or receive any baths of any kind until it is healed. After the first day you can continue to flush the area with sterile saline from your local pharmacy/drug store and this should help it heal well. It’s also a good idea to place an e-collar on his head to prevent Stevie from scratching the area. If things start to look like they are getting infected (yellow or pinkish foul smelling discharge), or if it doesn’t heal well within 4-7 days, then it’s best to have him seen by your vet. Sutures or staples may need to be placed to close the wound, antibiotics and pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication will likely be prescribed. I'd gently clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck.

I would recommend just leaving this alone and making sure he is not able to lick this area. It does not appear infected to me based on the photo, however if you are noticing redness or swelling around the wound or if there is discharge you should see a veterinarian. I would definitely recommend checking in with your veterinarian when they are open to make sure there is nothing else they would recommend for Reese.

It is not likely you can "fix" the hole at home. It looks like it needed to be stitched up when it happened as it is very deep. It should heal on it's own (which we call healing by second intention) but it will take quite a bit of time. The best topical you can put on that would be Silver Sulfadiazine cream (Silvadene). You can buy it at most pharmacies over the counter. It is a cream they use on burns in humans. It is great for all wound healing. Apply a thin layer twice a day. Other than that just keep it clean. DO NOT use peroxide to clean it. That will delay healing!!! Use dilute betadine solution or just use warm water. The best option is to have it surgically repaired. That way it will heal the fastest. I cannot tell you how much it will be. You will have to check with your local vets as the cost varies widely from clinic to clinic. I would say average would be $500. I hope this helps. Superficial wounds around the face are usually treated with topical antibiotics (creams or ointments) or antibiotics tablets. Larger wounds need to be stitched up, but if the would you found is not fresh, most likely your vet would not want to stitch it up. Please, clean the would twice a day with 4% chlorhexidine solution (you can buy it at pharmacies) for a few days and it will hopefully heal up. However, if it starts to bother Aimee or becomes painful you will have to take her to your nearest vets possibly to get a course of antibiotics.

Also, you can clean the dried blood and dirt with boiled, warm water or antiseptic solution (4% chlorhexidine works best). Once your local vets are open again, you should get Toby seen by them. The growth does not look nasty but if it is getting bigger, bleeding or bothering your dog, surgical removal should be discussed.
