My dog takes Carprofen. Can he also take Benazepril for kidney health?

Accidents happen! Fortunately, the carprofen won't impact her heart disease or interact with the pimobendan. However, there is a chance that she could experience some stomach upset with vomiting and/or diarrhea, particularly since this is a pretty big dose for a dog her size. With this kind of dose, the worst case I'd expect to see could be ulceration of the GI tract. Normally, carprofen is prescribed at a dose of 4.4 mg/kg over 24 hours. Today, your dog consumed 7.86 mg/kg. In most cases, we don't see toxicity impacting the kidneys until a dose of 40 mg/kg is ingested. With all of that in mind, your dog should be absolutely fine! In order to be extra cautious, I'd recommend feeding her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days, then gradually mix it in with her normal food over 5-7 days. You can also call your vet to see if they can give a dose for an antacid, like Pepcid. (It's illegal for me to do so without having examined your dog.) If you see any vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or blood in the stool, you should call your vet right away. I hope that everything goes well!

Without reviewing the full blood results and changes over time it is very difficult to say for sure but if your dog is unwell (especially with increased thirst, vomiting or diarrhea) and blood results are developing more concerning changes then I would be concerned about continuing with carprofen until a conclusion can be reached as to what is causing the chenges in the blood work. Obviously however, Buddy is in pain and shoudl be receiving some pain relief in order to improve his comfort leveles - you shoud speak to your vet about other types of pain relief or deek referral to a specialist

Carprofen controls pain and inflammation while gabapentin acts on neurological pain. If they are to be given chronically then bloodwork needs to be monitored especially for carprofen. It can have serious side effects on the liver and kidneys. Typically a blood sample is drawn before starting and then a month after use. From there bloodwork is usually monitored every 6 months. There will not be a comparable natural or over-the-counter medication. Joint supplements are available and some have been proven to slow the progression of arthritis. However, being supplements they are not regulated by the FDA and there is quite a bit of variation between products. They typically only help in mild cases. I hope this information helps!

Carprofen is an nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medication (NSAID) like aspirin or ibuprofen for humans. It's used daily for arthritis or other chronic pain, and short term for more acute/temporary pain. The half life is the amount of time it takes for half of the drug to leave the body (via the liver, kidneys/bladder, or gut). Carprofen can occasionally have side effects on the liver, so if he's going to be on it long term, it's usually recommended to check liver values after 2 weeks. That said, liver issues are rare. Intestinal upset (vomiting/diarrhea) are also possible side effects and if he had any of that you'd want to stop and figure out a different appropriate medication with his vet. With just 6 days of medication, no additional testing will be done. You can (and should, if that is how it was prescribed) give carporfen daily. Appropriate supplements could include fish oils and glucosamine and others, depending on what exactly is going on. I'd recommend asking about supplements for long term when you go for your recheck visit

If a UTI has been ruled out by urine culture, then protein losing nephropathy can be suspected as the cause, and an ACEI such as enalapril or benazepril can be used. I believe there is a newer medication on the US market for this purpose in dogs, but I can't remember it now! I just learned about it at a lecture a few months ago. I don't typically treat borderline high BP, but if the PLN is real then the ACEI will certain help lower the BP to decrease protein loss. Beta blockers would be the next step, but I haven't needed to use them personally. I wouldn’t have concerns about giving the Vetri-Science supplement along with enalapril and pimobendan, but it would be a good idea to check in with your vet first, particularly to see if a potassium has been checked recently. I am not familiar with the other supplement but do recommend the Vetri-Science. There is some evidence that a restricted protein diet can help with proteinuria so this may be worth discussing with your vet as well.
