Does my dog need a canine influenza shot for doggie daycare?

The Canine Flu vaccine is initially two vaccines given 3-4 weeks apaRt. After that, it is a yearly vaccine. If your dog has increased risk of exposure, she should be vaccinated. Dogs with increased risk are dogs that board frequently, go to daycare or dog parks regularly or get groomed regularly.

I'm not sure what exactly your veterinarian told you that was confusing, but there are two strains of canine influenza that have caused disease in recent years: H3N8 and H3N2. The second seems to be the most clinically relevant and as far as I know is the cause of all flu outbreaks this year. There is a newer vaccine that covers both H3N8 and H3N2, or you can get each vaccine separately. Parainfluenza is indeed a different virus. The canine influenza vaccine (both strains) is not considered a 'core' vaccine, meaning that dogs who are not at risk (primarily those that are not around large groups of other dogs) probably don't need this vaccine. This might be why your veterinarian said FlynnLee was up to date on vaccines but potentially did not have the influenza vaccine.

They are the same vaccine, but given at this interval in order to properly stimulate the dog's immune system. The intranasal form has the fastest onset of protection. It is not considered a core vaccine, but more a lifestyle vaccine. If your dog will be boarded or kenneled for any reason it is highly recommended. If he will go to the groomers or be around new dogs at a dog park or anything, or you take him places with you, then i would get it to protect him. If he is not exposed to those things and just stays at home, then it is not needed

Hello. A lot depends on what might be considered a problem in your area. For example, there have only been sporadic outbreaks across the country of Canine Influenza, & Lymes Disease is more of an issue east of the Mississippi. The AVMA considers the core or necessary vaccinations Rabies, Distemper, Adenovirus & Parvovirus, all of which can be given every 1, 2 or 3 years. If Pilos is resting and not having labored breathing, he should be ok to wait until tomorrow for his vet visit. Call ahead, and when you arrive the staff may encourage you to wait in the car with him until the vet is ready to examine him, or they may bring you straight into an exam room to prevent spread of infection.
