My dog with cancer won't eat kibble. What human food can he have?

I am so sorry about the diagnosis for you and Diamond. This is a cancer of the blood so it can go anywhere. Typically without chemotherapy and only prednisone the survival time is 30-60 days. You can try low fat yogurt, lean ground beef, turkey, chicken and rice and baby food. Typically they will feel nauseated and sick and will not have an appetite towards the end. The swelling from the lymph nodes can interfer with their comfort and breathing. They will drop weight drastically. When they are too weak to walk anymore and have no appetite or keep vomiting then it will be time for you to discussed euthanasia and quality of life with your vet.

Tony is such a handsome boy! I'm so sorry he has cancer though, that is very tough for you. I can understand not wanting to put him through surgery and chemo; while it will give him a little extra time, it won't cure the cancer and the end result is the same. It's fine not to do that, and if you really don't want to take that treatment path, I recommend making the most of the time you have left with him. Spoil him rotten, give him foods he loves (but make sure they aren't ones that are toxic!), go for walks and car rides, and have him enjoy every bit of life he has left. Continue to monitor his quailty of life, and make a list of five things he loves to do. When he no longer is doing at least two of them, then his quality of life has declined to a point where euthansia should be considered. Keep in contact with your vet about how he's doing to you can evaluate his quality of life objectively and make the best decision possible for him. I'm so sorry to hear the Cooper has cancer. I understand your concern. There is no blanket answer to your question though. He may be nauseated so taking a medication like Zofran (ondansetron) daily may be helpful. Ask your vet about using that. You know him best so just give him anything he wants to eat. You can try human baby food (meat flavors) often that works. Dogs also like Hill's a/d that you can get from your vet and it is very high in calories so they don't have to each much to take in more calories. I do think it is best to consult with your vet on this issue since they have all of his medical history. It is hard for me to comment without all the facts. I hope you understand.

Hello, I am so sorry for your concerns about Rocco. If he is still eating & drinking, & happy just to be with you, then you might try giving him some Pepcid to reduce stomach acid & hopefully help his appetite a bit more. A 23-pound dog would receive 5 mg every 12 hours. If any of his normal behaviors deteriorates further, or he begins to vomit regularly, then I think it will be time to say goodbye to your friend. I'm really sorry to hear about Chloe. I know how hard it is to see a friend suffering with this disease. Cancer that affects the liver can be caused by many different types of cancer, so I cannot advise on treatment for this without knowing the type of cancer. It is best that you have this discussion with your veterinarian. They would be able to find out what cancer it is by taking a sample of the tumor and sending it to the lab. The diet also depends on how well the liver is functioning. Again, your veterinarian would be able to tell you this after analyzing the blood chemistry. For now, feed whatever the veterinarian has advised. A switch in diet can be dangerous depending on how well the liver is functioning. I know this is a very difficult time and you have many questions, but your veterinarian will have the most information and be the best to answer them at this time. For now, try to stay positive and know that you have at-least given Chloe almost 10 years of a great life.

Poor guy. Your vet should be able to prescribe several medications to help with Ozzy's pain including: Gabapentin, Tramadol (mild pain control in many cases), Fentanyl patch, Rimadyl (NSAID, for pain) or even Hydromorphone (if severe). He may not be eating due to the pain, so its important to get him something prescribed as soon as possible. A simple phone call should be able to get him the pain medication he needs. We call this palliative care (keeping the pet comfortable) when dealing with inoperable cancerous masses. Until then, you can try offering him some plain boiled chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice OR canned baby food (meat/vegetables) to hopefully entice him to eat something. I DO NOT recommend any over the counter human pain medication as these can be very toxic to pets causing acute liver or kidney failure. I do hope that Ozzy's pain can be managed well soon! Thank you for submitting your question regarding Boppa. The mass appears quite large from your pictures and ulcerated. I assume this is painful to him. If he is no longer eating well, this is also a sign of pain. I recommend discussing euthanasia with his veterinarian. He appears to be a stoic dog based on his breed and other than not eating well, will likely not tell you he is in pain. I am sorry for your situation and hope this information helps.
