My dog has a bump below his hip. Is it a bone or is it normal?

It is difficult to determine the cause without examining the dog. It could just be normal anatomy or it could be a mass or cyst. Have your vet take a look at it to help diagnose. If needed, your vet can aspirate it and examine the cells under a microscope.

Hello. If Scarlett has 2 lumps pretty much over each hip, & with Scarlett being a slightly older dog, then my guess is she has "love handles". If Scarlett is also a little overweight, the hips are a common place for some fat to accumulate. Rest assured that tumors rarely happen in the same area on both sides of the body, & since your vet is rather unconcerned, then it sounds like Scarlett is fine. If you are really concerned, you can ask your veterinarian to do a fine needle aspirate in which a very small needle is used to remove a drop or 2 of sample from under the lumps. Hip dysplasia does not cause lumps or bumps. I would be concerned this is a tumor and I recommend to have her examined. Older dogs (just like people) are more prone to develop lumps/bumps and some of these can be cancerous. Older pets are also more prone to arthritis. This lump under Behr's skin is most likely something benign like a cyst or lipoma, however there is a small chance it could be something cancerous. At such a young age cancer is unlikely but not impossible. If the growth doesn't go away within a few days or it gets larger it would be a good idea to have Behr examined by a veterinarian. If necessary a small needle aspirate can be taken from the lump and looked at under the microscope to determine if it should be removed surgically. If this lump is at the bottom of his rib cage, what you may be feeling on Buster is his xyphoid process. This is a normal part of a dog's anatomy, and not something to be concerned about at all. If you are concerned, you can always take Buster into the vet to have it examined.

That is unusual that Dirt's left hip bone looks larger than normal. It's good that she isn't limping and is not showing any signs of pain when you manipulate her leg. It's a good idea that she sees a vet for this problem, and it's fine to wait a week for it since she seem otherwise normal. I would recommend getting x-rays done on the hip to help diagnose what is causing it to look larger than normal. To be safe, I would rest her until her appointment. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Genesis it's hard to say. If the lumps are symmetric and soft, it is likely fatty subcutaneous tissue. Like "love handles" in people. Again, without seeing her I can't say that for sure but this is a common area where fat is stored on dogs and owners commonly are worried about it.
