Why is my dog bruising and swollen after mast cell tumor biopsy?

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 41.8 lbs

Hi, my Staffordshire bull terrier has just been found to have a mast cell tumour on her hind leg. On Friday she underwent a biopsy and a fine needle aspiration of her lymph node to determine whether the cancer has spread. By Saturday afternoon her lymph node is quite swollen and she is rapidly bruising! I rang the vet and they said this is normal? Just wanting some peace of mind on the bruising as it has me greatly concerned. This picture is 36 hours after FNA.

Hi, thank you for getting in touch with us. I totally understand your concerns, From the picture you are showing us, I would say that the bruising is excessive considering the small procedure. However mast cell tumours release substances that cause a lot of inflammation in the surrounding tissues, so this is what could have occurred to Sandy. I would recommend to have Sandy reassessed, if she is other ways well in herself, eating and drinking, tail wagging and comfortable you can make an appointment for tomorrow with your regular vets. If you are worried that she is unhappy, please take her in today. It would be best for you to see your own vet for continuity of care, because they have all Sandy's records and they did the procedure 36 hrs ago. Having said this, if you are not happy about the way your vets handle your concerns, I would go and see another vet. It would be interesting to know what medications is Sandy on. If you want to apply something just on the bruised area, Arnica is a natural but powerful ointment that helps a lot with bruising. I would not apply it where the dressing is. You just need to massage it gently so that it gets absorbed into the skin, 2-3 times a day. It is sold at the chemist under the name Arnicare cream. Also Lymph nodes in the area are quite deep, so I am thinking that maybe you are feeling something else ?

    Yes that could be quite normal as mast cells can release certain substances (histamine) and create inflammatory reaction around the tissues where the tumor is. A major/systemic but rare allergic reaction can occur though in certain cases and if the bruising gets worse in the next hours I would strongly recommend a veterinary check up to rule it out.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but some redness and swelling can occur as the body brings cells to repair the wound and surrounding tissue. You can use a clean warm washcloth compress a few times a day to help keep the area free of debris and reduce swelling of the area. An Elizabethan (cone) collar is also a good idea to keep it from being licked or chewed on. If it does begin to weep, the swelling or redness spreads, the incision opens up, or it is painful or bothersome to Delilah, then a checkup with your vet ASAP is best to rule out more serious issues.

My dog has MCT. Is his spreading leg swelling due to cancer?
Poor Diesel. I would be worried this could be part of his cancer. The release of large amounts of histamine from mast cell tumors into the body can cause local inflammation and swelling around a mast cell tumor. In the picture, his leg does look quite swollen and it's quite concerning that the fluid is spreading to other areas. I think it's important to take him into a vet immediately to have this checked out. It may be time to talk about his quality of life, as it could be that letting him go peacefully would be the best option for him. I know that is an extremely hard conversation to have, but they are important ones to have when a dog is sick with a terminal illness. Please take him into a vet asap. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this.

Dog lump bleeding and swelling after biopsy: Could it be an MCT?
I know this is upsetting, and it's difficult waiting for the results of the biopsy. However, you should know that pretty much any ear trauma (surgical or otherwise) causes a considerable amount of bleeding, even if properly closed. So I don't think this additional bit of bleeding is necessarily confirmation that this is a mast cell tumor, but I'm glad you're getting a definitive answer, regardless.

My dog's mast cell tumor is swollen and painful. Can I use a compress?
Yes, you can do it (cold compress for 5minutes 3-4 times daily) and massage the leg gently from the paw to the body. An immediate check up is needed though as this could be due to an allergic reaction due to the tumor itself.

Yes, that is fairly normal for a punch biopsy. The opening is usually quite small, but it's a deep wound, so it tends to bleed a lot; especially in certain areas of the body and with certain lesions. I would not be worried right now. Keep it covered and the bleeding will stop soon. The bleeding will not be enough to cause any major damage, so no worries about that. The swelling should go down in the next 2-3 days. If it's past three days and it's still swelling, then it would be worth a recheck by your veterinarian. I hope that helps and Baxter gets better soon.

Hello. That is a lot of bruising, but it just indicates that there was some subsurface capillary bleeding. This can occur in any surgery, but most often is the result of too much activity too soon after surgery. Try to confine Barklie a little more, by keeping him indoors & leash walking only for another week. If he is licking a lot, you may have to put an Elizabethan collar on him for a week or so so everything can heal. You can pick up the collars at most pet stores or even Tractor Supply if one is near you. My dog's back leg is swollen. Vet gave meds, what else could it be?
I can see the swelling from the pictures you posted. It appears the swelling goes form the foot all the way to the knee. I see that you live in an area where snake bite is possible. I would check thoroughly for any punctures along the entire leg and see if Diamond is painful in any particular area. If not, other causes of swelling like this could include infection, allergic reaction, trauma, cancer, among others. Sometimes swelling in an entire limb can be caused by decreased lymphatic flow - this can be caused by damage to lymph nodes or a structure under the skin or inside the body that is impinging on the lymph flow. I have also seen swelling like this with a flare-up of a mast cell tumor elsewhere on the body. I agree with your vet; if the medications prescribed to not make a difference, additional diagnostics are warranted. They may include bloodwork, abdominal x-rays, tick testing, or sampling of any small masses found.
