My yellow lab has bruises on the inside of her hips, what's wrong?

These definitely look like bruises, and can be caused by abnormal blood clotting. This can be caused by certain toxins such as rat poison, cancers, and inherent inability of the blood to clot. Hello. The hips do look pretty good. I would ask your veterinarian to examine & determine if it is possible that Zoi has injured her knee. I would be especially interested in your vet conducting an exam looking for a cranial drawer sign that would indicate an anterior cruciate ligament tear, a common injury in larger breed dogs. It is most likely caused by arthritis (inflammation of the joints), which is quite common in large breed. you will need to take Bolt to the vet to get it confirmed (usually xray needed), then the vet will discuss with your regarding treatment options.

This is usually secondary to concerning reasons such as a coagulopathy (difficulty coagulating blood) which could be due to infectious, inflammatory or cancerous causes. Other possibilities include masses underneath the affected tissue or trauma (for example being hit by a car) to that region if that is a possibility. I highly recommend that you have Jackson by a veterinarian for further work-up and treatment based on findings. Good luck!

This is troubling since without an injury bruising is uncommon in dogs. Please check her urine to make sure visually there is no blood in it, and check her gums to make sure they are pink. If there are tiny bruises in the gums then that could be a sign of general internal bleeding. The most common cause of this a toxicity from rat poison. It also can be due to other reasons. Unfortunately, in this breed, ACL injuries are common and are typically due to degenerative changes with the ligament (if this is a back leg lameness). Also, if this is an ACL injury, there is a > 50% chance that the opposite leg will be affected by the same problem down the road. On the examination with the veterinarian, they will check her knee joint and see if there is an instability called a cranial drawer or a tibial thrust. Both of these manipulations help confirm the suspicion of an ACL injury. Most of the time, an ACL injury requires surgical correction to fix. This can be discussed further with your veterinarian once diagnosed. This may not be an ACL injury and may be osteoarthritis or hip dysplasia causing discomfort. I would recommend x-rays of the affected leg. If this is a front leg, there are other possibilities such as arthritis, a bone fracture, infection, ligament injury, elbow dysplasia, etc. I would definitely get Bliss on a joint supplement along with omega 3 fish oil. I typically recommend Dasuquin and Welactin for supplements, which can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please, monitor Chloe for a few days at home. Typically, a large bruise like this should decrease slowly in size and disappear in the next 5-7 days. However, if the area is painful to touch or Chloe is lethargic and not herself, you should take her to your local vets for an appointment.
