Why is my 9-year-old German Shepherd having brown/pink discharge?

I am sorry Reese is not feeling good. I am not 100% sure about Reese's age but I would be concerned about a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, prostate issues or even trauma. I would highly recommend taking Reese to a vet for a good exam and possible urine test or x-rays. Or it could be a very serious condition known as [pyometra](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/pyometra/), which means infected uterus. Especially if she had her heat cycle a couple of months ago, and if she's lethargic or has a fever you need to take her in to a veterinarian to be examined tonight. If she is spayed, this could be several things. She could have a [urinary tract infection](https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-signs-of-urinary-tract-disease-in-dogs) and you're seeing her leak blood-tinged urine. I hope not, but depending on her age there could be cancer in the urinary tract that's causing bleeding (blood doesn't always look bright red). Very occasionally spayed dogs will continue to bleed if a piece of an ovary was left behind. Get her checked out by your veterinarian as soon as possible to figure out what's going on.

The first heat cycle can start anywhere from 9-13 months of age in a dog her size. Then the dog will cycle roughly every 9 months. It will be a red to brown to pink colored discharge. If she finished her last heat cycle 2-3 months ago, she could have discharge from a uterine infection known as a pyometra. In this case, the discharge would be foul smelling and look more like pus. Lastly, she could have a urinary tract infection. Unless she is starting her heat cycle, she will need to see her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

This can be a fatal turn right on Rio Grande St. infection leading to sepsis turn left on superior and death if left untreated. While antibiotics can decrease signs It will typically not fully clear the infection, which will cotinue to recur and worsen. If Izzy has a foul smelling bloody discharge she needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible.

If the discharge appears to be coming from his anus or surrounding area, I would be concerned about an anal sac infection, which is not an uncommon occurrence. I would take Jimmy (like that name!) into your local veterinarian for an exam and rectal exam to get a better look at what the issue is. They may flush the infected area and place him on antibiotics. Your poor pup! If she isn't spayed, I would be very concerned that she has a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and it would cause a white discharge as well as vomiting. It sounds like your vet may have been suspicious she had a pyometra and tried treating it medically with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately the medical route often isn't successful, and surgery is needed to treat it. This means spaying her. I would take her back into the vet immediately, as this is a medical emergency. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How old is your dog? As dogs age there are chronic changes to the uterine lining, it becomes thickened and sometimes even cystic. Metritis just means inflammation of the uterine lining and there are many causes most of which have nothing to do with pregnancy. If she had purulent discharge from her vulva that indicates an infection. A pyometra means infection (puss) in the uterus. If she responded to antibiotics I would assume she has a pyometra. My best advice is to have her spayed. It is the best thing for your dog. If she had discharge then the pyometra is open. If there was no discharge it is considered closed. I wish you the best!
