Dog has a broken tooth. Is it safe to wait for extraction surgery?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So this is a “complicated” fracture of the canine- meaning the pulp cavity is exposed. Unfortunately, if Titus walked into my office, I’d recommend scheduling a dental and removing the tooth. Once the pulp cavity is exposed, bacteria can travel up it and cause a deep abscess in the bone. Then you have weeks of antibiotics and still have to do the procedure. This does not always happen, but there is no way to know which case it will happen to. The other option is seeing a dental specialist for a root canal and crown. That being said, it’s not very painful unless he is chewing with it (which he’ll probably avoid). And not much is going to happen in the next two days, or even in the next two months. Don’t put anything on there and just leave it alone. Schedule an appointment when it’s convenient and talk with your vet about your options. Also talk about why he is chewing his crate (often a sign of moderate to severe separation anxiety). And how to prevent future damage to other teeth. Best wishes to you and Titus!

It can wait for Monday, it's probably either an infection or a bad reaction to the suture material. if she is not on antibiotics already then she will probably need a short course of antibiotics for it to get better.

The gold standard of treatment would be to have it extracted (removed). In the real world though it probably won't cause him much discomfort or harm if you left it in. Just monitor the tooth regularly. If it turns purple, that means there is damage to the root/pulp and then it will definitely need to come out. If it stays white I would say it can wait until he needs an anesthetic procedure at some other point in time and then it can be removed then.

Hello. That tooth probably should come out, even though it is a puppy tooth, but you can wait until Friday as long as Luna does not seem uncomfortable. . Your veterinarian might just leave it be, but there is a small chance of infection that can get into the root & then the bone causing problems with the adult tooth. Just because you had one dog that had a bad experience with a procedure certainly does not mean this dog will have the same. I know you are worried but you have to do what is best for him. If you wait and don't have the dental procedure done then his condition may worsen. That will make the procedure longer under anesthesia. If you take care of it now, then it is likely to be an easier procedure. If your vet recommends this be done, and you trust him/her, then I think you should have it done. Of course, you can always go to another vet and get a second opinion and then make a decision based on two opinions.

Hello, sorry to hear about Bella. It looks like the crown of her canine tooth broke off. Although she may have experienced some discomfort, it is also likely that Bella had underlying dental disease which caused her tooth to become weakened and thus break while playing. Therefore, its unlikely she is experiencing any additional discomfort now. If you see she does not want to eat, or has excessive salivation, or is pawing at her face, then you should could have more concerning discomfort. Bella should be evaluated, but it is something that can wait so that she may see her primary care veterinarian tomorrow for a dental appointment.
