Puppy in heat: Can she get a Bordetella shot if possibly pregnant?

We don't normally recommend vaccinating pregnant dogs, since if she would happen to have a reaction to the vaccines, this could cause significant problems for the developing puppies or even cause her to lose the pregnancy. So if you think Rosie might be pregnant, I would recommend waiting until after she's had the puppies, and then having her vaccinations updated.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She should have all her vaccines and be dewormed prior to getting pregnant. Things to think about are if Virguie's breed has any trouble giving birth naturally so you can be financially prepared for a surgical C-section. Record all breeding dates accurately. Discuss measuring Progesterone levels with your Vet to time breeding. Look in to whelping boxes and watch videos on whelping so you can help during birth with removing the placentas from the puppies faces and tying umbilical chords. Purchase a bulb syringe to remove mucous from the puppies noses. Virguie should be fed puppy food while pregnant and while nursing. At day 50 pregnant have your Vet take an X-ray of her bally to estimate the number of puppies to expect. Start measuring Virguie's rectal temperature daily around day 58 pregnant to watch for a temperature drop that indicates the start of labor. Always keep your Vet prepared so they can assist you if you have problems. Be prepared to financially deworm and vaccinate the puppies when they need it and to take care of any unexpected illnesses in the mother and with the puppies. I hope this helps!

Just as I already answered, yes, there can be problems if she is pregnant and vaccines were given. There is no way to know what will happen until it happens (or doesn't). What problems could arise would depend on how far along she was when the vaccines were administered. There is no sense in worrying at this time as it has already been done. A pseudopregnant dog is not pregnant, in which case, there should be no problem with vaccinating her.

What a pretty girl! No, it's not recommended to give any vaccines during pregnancy in dogs. I would wait until after she's had her puppies and is finished nursing them, then update her vaccines at that time :)

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The Bordatella vaccine is used to prevent ONE cause of Kennel Cough caused by the bacteria Bordatella Bronchiseptica. Most boarding facilities, doggie day cares and groomers require it as it is contagious between dogs. If Nina goes to these places or goes to dog parks or plays with other dogs a lot then it is recommended to give. It is an elective vaccine though, meaning it is your choice. Living with 5 other dogs is a risk if one of them gets it some where. Kennel cough isn't deadly just annoying to you and the dog because the cough is very loud. Since you started the vaccine I would finish it can decide next year whether you want to continue it. Good luck!
