My dog has sores on her body. What are the causes and treatments?

Oh dear, poor Peanut! Some dogs are allergic to fleas and can actually develop bacterial skin infections as a result of ongoing scratching and licking. The first two photos look most suspicious for signs of a skin infection, but the third photo looks more suspicious for a raised benign or malignant mass. I'm glad that you're planning on taking Peanut to his vet when it is financially feasible for you. In the meantime, make sure that all pets in your house have been treated with a high quality flea preventative, such as Nexgard, Bravecto, or K9 Advantix II (or Advantage, Revolution, or Bravecto for cats if you also have cats in the house). You can also give your dogs a dose of oral Capstar ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=10902 ) to rapidly kill adult fleas in addition to the flea preventatives mentioned previously. Be sure to use these flea preventatives regularly without missing doses to break the flea life cycle! I can definitely see the small scabs and hairless on Peanut's back - those must be so uncomfortable. It can be frustrating to watch her scratch constantly and not have anything help. While the remedies you tried may help to decrease the symptoms, they do not provide a cure for what is actually causing Peanut to itch. I recommend that Peanut sees a vet who can figure out the underlying cause. Things like mites buried deep in the skin (which are not treated with flea sprays), food allergies, and chronic bacterial/fungal infections can be causing her issues. Your vet can take a sample from the skin to determine what is going on, as well as run some blood work to rule out underlying hormonal imbalances.

Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. Logan may indeed have pyoderma, but further testing is needed to help determine if this is the case. Make note of if there is a seasonal recurrence of the lesions, as environmental allergies often cause recurring irritation. I recommend making an appointment to have Logan seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the red areas you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet may want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment.

These rashes and sores can be caused by various reasons such as fleas, ringworm, mites ,fungal infection, bacterial infection and allergies. the first 4 needs to be ruled out before we start treating for allergies. in order to do that first de-flea Canelo with a high quality flea treatment such as advantage spot on, if it doesn't help - take him to the vet in order to check for/treat the other possibilities. If everything is ruled out, then an allergy treatment can be started. Usually an hypoallergenic food is a good way to start together with anti histamines. if it doesn't help - the best solution is a medication called Apoquel which treats allergies with great success and without side effects.

Daisy may be having an allergic reaction. Allergies can be to contact with a substance, fleas, food or environmental. Sometimes dogs can get a random infection. I would search her closely for fleas. Topical flea products can still allow fleas to live long enough to cause a reaction. Oral flea products are much better because the fleas die faster. Otherwise, I would take her into the vet for treatment (since it sounds like she has many lesions). Likely these are bacterial in nature but they are circular so ringworm (which humans can get) is always a potential. Once treatment is completed, watch Daisy for reoccurrence. It sounds like she might have a bacterial skin infection. You could bathe her with a medicated dog shampoo but she may need an oral antibiotic to treat. Have her examined by a vet to determine the exact cause and then your vet can prescribe medications to treat.
