My dog had a blood transfusion and is on liver meds. What's wrong?

I'm sorry Meddy is sick. I am trying to understand exactly what is going on with him. It sounds like your vet is suspicious of an immune mediated disease (where Meddy's own immune system is malfunctioning and destroying her platelets (as well as possibly her red blood cells and/or white blood cells). A blood transfusion may have been required help Meddy survive. Let me briefly review the medications you've listed: *Zip vit- I am not familiar with this, but it seems to be a vitamin supplement. *I suppose "sucroll" may be the drug sucralfate, which is a medication that helps to decrease bleeding in the stomach and intestine. *Livotas is not something used in the US and I cannot find any information on it. *Thrombup is an herbal that may be beneficial when platelets are low (I don't have any experience with this one, and it is not generally used in the US) *Lisybin is a supplement for liver health. *Alamin R Forte is not something I have experience with but appears to be used for a number of different indications in India. *I assume Doxypet is doxycycline, which is an antibiotic commonly used to treat possible underlying infection that results in immune mediated cell destruction. Doxycycline also has some anti-inflammatory properties that can be helpful. *udiliv300 is ursodiol, which helps with bile flow from the gallbladder and through the liver *Venol is not a drug used in dogs in the US, so I am not sure what the purpose of this mediation would be for Meddy. *azathioprine suppressed the immune system and helps treat immune mediated diseases. Azathioprine can have negative side effects on the liver, so the liver protective medications listed may be to help try to minimize these negative effects on the liver. * I do not know what you mean by NS DNA D10. Regarding the pictures you've attached : The first picture is shows small spots of bleeding under the skin, which would commonly be seen with low platelet counts. The second picture looks like what is an amino acid supplement that can be given as an injection. I am not sure of the purpose of this medication for Meddy, but I don't see a reason it would cause harm. The third picture of the lab findings- shows the red cell count a little low (mild anemia), and there is no number for either the platelets or the total white blood cell count. Generally that means those counts are very low--too low for the machine to read. To try to answer your questions: I am not highly suspicious that this is liver cancer, but it is possible. We can see immune mediated cell destruction AS A CONSEQUENCE of cancer, so it may be that liver cancer, or another type of cancer, is the underlying cause. It is possible that the liver value abnormalities on the lab work are a side effect from the medication. You can talk to your vet about potentially having an abdominal ultrasound (sonogram of the belly) performed. This may help identify a tumor in the liver or elsewhere that may be the underlying cause of disease. The picture that you took with the spots on the skin-- this would be seen from low platelets. I suspect that the medications were all started BECAUSE of low platelets. It takes time to get that platelet count up, so bleeding will continue while platelets are low. So more bleeding will occur until the meds are working. I do not think that this is reaction to medications. (Having said that, unfortunately sometimes patients just do not respond well to treatment and we cannot get the platelet count up despite our best efforts). Regarding the jaundice that you've seen after the medication was given-- again I doubt this was a result of the medication. If his red blood cells are being destroyed by his immune system, this will result in jaundice. Additionally, following transfusion (even from a known blood source) jaundice is common. Meddy likely is suffering from an infection (elevated white blood cell count). However without a clinical history, signs of apparent illness and for how long the condition has been active, there is no way to pinpoint where the infection is, and a cause. We do not just treat on account of blood test results Her liver parameters are borderline high, so that may or may not be significant or a sign of disease. Anotheer problem may be that this blood was examined in a lab for human medicine and therefore the parameter normals may just be different. Best consult with your veterinary doctor who has given Meddy an exam.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for providing the blood work. Did you allow the belly X-rays. The Vet thinks they felt a mass in Big Mac's belly. That makes me think that he most likely has a tumor in his belly that ruptured and he is bleeding internally. He needs surgery to remove the mass and to biopsy it to see if it is cancer or benign. But he will absolutely need a blood transfusion before surgery. If you can not afford to do further testing, a transfusion and surgery I would highly recommend considering Big Mac's quality of life. He is suffering. That low level of anemia is making him feel weak, light headed and blood in the belly is painful. I am so sorry. I hope this helps you in some way

We are not legally allowed to prescribe medications without actually examining the animal. You will need to ask your vet about precription medications and proper dosing. If he was just seen and had bloodwork than your vet may be able to prescribe over the phone. Call your vet and ask if it is ok to give the medication and ask about dosing. Hope he recovers soon!

It looks like he is suffering from some liver and kidney values elevations and he also is anemic. (Low red blood cells). Since I do not not his current condition and how long this has been going on, it is difficult for me to give you a survival time. If this has happened quickly and could be a toxin then with aggressive therapy (hospitalization and IV fluids), then these values could go back to normal and stay that way as long as there wasn't any permanent damage. If this has been chronic and his urine is very dilute then this could be permanent damage to the kidneys which is a much poorer prognosis long term. I would still recommend hospitalization and IV fluids if possible. I would talk to your vet about whether he needs fluids, antibiotics, appetite stimulants, anti-nausea medicine etc. I hope this helps and your sweet baby gets well really soon!

Hi, Oscar needs to be hospitalized and treated with IV fluids, antibiotics, and gastrointestinal protectants. Additionally, he should be tested for infectious diseases such as leptospirosis and ultrasounded to determine if he has any problems in his liver or kidneys.

This could be due to his immune system destroying his red blood cells in a condition known as Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). Treatment for IMHA typically entails suppressing the immune system along with treating any potential infectious causes. It sounds as if the veterinarian working on Moji is treating him appropriately. Unfortunately, treating anemia can be a waiting game. Blood values need to be monitored every 2-3 days in the initial period and if the red blood cells continue to decline, he will need to be hospitalized for further treatment and closer monitoring.
