My dog is bloated after stone surgery. Is urine leaking into his belly?

Without a hands-on exam I really cannot say much about the peeing. It is quite possible that the excess fluid in the abdomen (often a sign of liver disease, cushing's disease, heart disease and tumors) could be pressing on the bladder and so hinder urination. An exploratory surgery will lay open the abdominal content and your vet will be able to immediately tell what your dog's problem is and possibly why he has ascites (fluid in the abdomen). Without seeing the results of the tests I also cannot tell you what your veterinarian may suspect, however since he wants to do an exploratry laparotomy he is likely suspecting a problem with the liver. The bloating is actually an expansion of the abdomen caused by the fluid. I am sorry about your dog being so sick. I would say an exploratory laparotomy is likely the best way to find out what is wrong with your dog.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Treama. After bladder surgery, there is a quite a bit of inflammation in the urinary tract and this can cause urine leakage. It should resolve with time, but is worth discussing with her veterinarian. Some middle aged spayed female dogs will leak urine due to a lack of hormones. This is unrelated to bladder stones, but could be a contributing cause in her case. This condition is known as hormone responsive incontinence and can be asked about as well. Bloat with a gastric torsion would be rare in a small dog, like a Maltese. If he is still having problems then you should call your vet and have him rechecked. If he is having trouble moving around then your vet can check his back and neck and make sure he isn't having an issue with his spine. Your vet may need to run some blood-work to help diagnose the problem and/or repeat x-rays. He may need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications to make him more comfortable. I am very sorry to hear about your labrador. It sounds like he needs to have diagnostic imaging (x-rays or preferably ultrasound) performed to examine the abdominal cavity, or if that is not an option, an exploratory surgery may be needed. I would be concerned about a large abscess or a tumor that had a cystic or abscessed area, but truly to determine the cause and whether or not treatment will be helpful further investigation is needed.

I think the rash on Tinkerbell's abdomen might be irritation from urine if she is leaking. I would be concerned that the urine leakage could be a sign of ongoing neurologic disease, and I think it would be best to recheck with your vet or see an emergency vet to make sure she is able to empty her bladder appropriately. I'm not sure about the swelling (it's hard to see in your picture), but it's possible that this is related to the fluids, or it could be a sign that something else is going on. It sounds to me like she might benefit from continued monitoring and hospitalization.

That's a tough case. If the ultrasound did not include evaluation of the kidneys and ureters (tubes leading from kidney to bladder), it may be worthwhile to have this evaluated using ultrasound or CT. Some patients have ureters that are implanted abnormally in the bladder wall leading to urinary accidents. The second question would be whether or not he has crystals in the urine which may lead to irritation and accidents. The third question is the thickening in the bladder wall...what is it? Can it be aspirated? You need to discuss these questions with your veterinarian or possibly a veterinary internal medicine specialist.

Oh man! Poor Ray Ray! He’s had a rough couple weeks! So my guess is that it has to do with gravity. Blood in the urinary tract after these kinds of surgeries is common. I suspect the blood collects a bit at the tip of the penis but there is little urine making it all the way down there to flush it out. So it clots and comes out every once in a while. As long as they are small and not very frequent, I’m not very worried. If they are large or frequent, you should talk to your surgeon right away to see what they think.
