Is my dog bleeding like in heat one week after spay concerning?

Strictly rest her: no running, jumping, playing with other dogs and leash walks only for 2 weeks. Use an E-collar or T-shirt to prevent licking of the incision. Watch for increased lethargy, anorexia, or labored breathing. Bleeding is a complication of a spay regardless of if they are in heat or not. Luna should be fine!!

Take Molly and a sample of her urine in to the vet. If there ARE signs that she is in heat, talk to your vet about testing for an ovarian remnant (a few ovary cells left in the body can be enough to trigger a heat sometimes). Hi ! If Holly is well in herself, eating bright passing normal feaces and urine, I would not worry. A little bit of vaginal discharge is expected folllowing the surgery and should gradually decrease and disappear. It can take sometimes a couple of weeks for it to settle completely. That is unusual. This may be from spaying her when in heat, and the discharge is just coming out. The hormones also can take up to six weeks to go down so she may be having a false pregnancy even though she’s been spayed. I would watch her closely. These symptoms should resolve over the next few weeks. If the bleeding continues that is not normal and could indicate a problem with the internal incision. There can sometimes be some bleeding 7-14 days after being spayed as the sutures start to dissolve in the body. Most of the time this resolves with any treatment necessary. If you continue to see blood coming from the vulva for several days in a row (or if there are additional symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, etc), it would warrant an examination and blood work. I have never heard of using Tranexamic in dogs, so I can't comment on that medication.

If your dog is behaving otherwise, I would advise you to monitor her at home. However, if she is lethargic, weak, has pale gums or is passing a large amount of blood, you should take her back to your veterinarian or to the nearest veterinary ER immediately. If a dog is spayed correctly they not long have heat cycles and should not be spotting or bleeding. If there is a discharge noted, it is best to start with a urine sample and an ultrasound to look at the bladder and kidneys and look at the cervix to see if there is an infection or a growth.
