My dog has a bleeding cut near his rear. What first aid can I give?

Poor Scarlet. If the wound is mild (the bleeding is stopping on its won, there is no muscle or deep tissue exposure, etc), you can apply pressure to stop the bleeding and clean the wound with saline rinse and apply triple antibiotic ointment. An E-collar or "cone" can prevent licking/biting and further trauma as the wound heals. However, if the bleeding does not stop on it's own, Scarlet appears to be in pain, or the wound is very deep, Scarlet should be seen by a vet right away, as she may need sutures, antibiotics, and pain medication. She will need to see her veterinarian. It may require surgery to heal depending on the size of the wound. If not, bandaging and antibiotics could be needed. If the wound is deep, ideally, your dog should be physically examined by a veterinarian. Sutures (stitches) may be needed to close the cut. If it is superficial, you may be able to manage it at home. I suggest carefully trimming (use clippers, not scissors) the hair away and cleaning the area gently with a diluted Betadine, chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) or similar [antibacterial solution](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-wound-and-skin-care-for-dogs). Dry thoroughly afterwards. A dab of a triple antibiotic ointment can be applied to a minor wound. Place an [e-collar](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-e-collar) (cone) on your dog to prevent licking. If the wound shows no signs of healing after a few days, consider an exam with your veterinarian. I would try some kind of wrap around his belly or maybe put a shirt on him so you can transport him now. It is likely pressure alone won’t stop the bleeding and it needs to be addressed. He could have an infection and need an antibiotic. Keep the area clean, dry, and prevent him from licking the area until you can take him to the vet. If the bleeding seems excessive or he becomes lethargic than he should be seen immediately to rule out a clotting problem. .

This looks like a possible mass that has a really good blood supply or even a blood blister. I would try applying a cold compress on it for 5-10 minutes, if a vet is not readily available. If you can get the bleeding to stop tonight I would leave it be for now and then get this checked in the morning by your vet if possible. However if you cannot get the bleeding to stop even after the cold compress and perhaps even placing a make-shift wrap around it, then an ER vet visit has to be considered to stabilize the area. However, an ER vet visit is usually only needed if it is gushing blood, for fear or too much blood loss. If it is oozing then it likely can wait until morning before seeking veterinary assistance. I am sorry to hear about Stitch's accident! You can try to slow or stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the wound if you actually can see and reach it. Apply pressure with a clean cloth or towel. Another way to help stop bleeding is to apply an ice pack. Be sure to wrap it with a cloth or towel so it isn't directly touching the skin, and hold over the affected area. It will help the blood vessels constrict and bleeding to slow. If there is a nonstop stream of blood, then he should go to the emergency vet. An occasional drip doesn't require an emergency trip unless he seems to be becoming weak or his gums are pale in color.
