My dog has bladder stones. How much Royal Canin SO and green beans?

Hello, sorry to hear about Penny, I wish her a speedy recovery. The recommendation to put her on a different diet, likely a Urinary SO diet is so that this changes the pH of her urine to prevent reoccurrence of struvite stone formation. She doesn't "have" to be on a different diet per say, but if you continue her normal diet, there's a chance she may reform struvite stones. Hope this helps!

I believe you're referring to Royal Canines brand of urinary diet SO. In conjunction with appropriate medication SO is a great food to help prevent urinary tract infections. Lulu will likely need to be on this food for the rest of her life. Any changes to a non-urinary diet may trigger a recurrence of crystals or stones. If she does not resolve after a month of anabiotic's and diet, further diagnostic testing such as ultrasound or scoping of the bladder may be necessary to determine the cause of the urinary tract issues. My own dog is on Royal Canin SO and he does great, until my kids feed him the wrong food and then he has a flare up again. So please be sure to feed her only the prescribed diet. I like Royal canin SO, Hill's science diet c/d or Purina UR. For example is Royal Canin SO the maximum magnesium in the dry food is 0.08%. That will be hard to match over the counter. Hello again. It really depends on what type of stones are present, such as are they oxylate or struvite? Some stones are harder to manage with diet than others, & of course, it also depends on what is available in your country. Your veterinarian is the best individual to help with this unless you have some laboratory data that indicates what is going on. Hills & Royal Canin Prescription Diets are very popular here. You can definitely add a little plain white rice, but not so much as to dilute the diets, & please do not add any supplements unless directed to do so by your veterinarian. What diet he should be eating is dependent on what is the pressing issue right now. If he is recovering from pancreatitis then he should be eating a low fat bland diet until the issue has resolved. After the pancreas is back to normal then he should go back to eating the Royal Canin urinary diet. If the pancreas condition is chronic then you really need to speak to your vet about what is best for him to eat since they are privy to all his medical history whereas I am not.

The appropriate diet here would be the urinary diet either Urinary S/O or Hill's C/D, and then placing your pet on a liver protectant medication to address the liver issues. The liver protectant medication is called Denamarin, and has to be prescribed by your vet. I would then consider getting your pet an abdominal ultrasound to better define what is specifically going on with the liver, so that we know what mode of therapy would be best to manage things going forward, because these values (ALKP, CHOL) can be changed by not just the liver, but also the gallbladder and adrenal glands. The key here is extreme moderation. If you give too much of something that is not formulated to be S/O friendly, you compromise the diet and then it doesn’t work. It should be fine to give Sadie a carrot stick or a couple sugar peas once a day. The absolute best majority of her intake should be either the diet or the urine friendly treats. I would probably avoid giving her meat products. Stick to the veggies as this will help control weight as well. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
