My dog's bladder mass test inconclusive. Why re-test for cancer?

Hello, my dog has recently had a urinalysis after an ultrasound showed a mass in his bladder. I have just had a call from the vet to inform me I need to pay for another urinalysis as it was inconclusive, and that they should of seen 17 cells to confirm cancer, but they could only find 15. I'm baffled

Well this is quite strange. I don't know why the difference of 15 to 17 cells will make much a difference in the diagnosis. I would call them and try to get a more thorough explanation as to why they like to find the specific number of abnormal cells. If the urine does have an infection, I would have the UTi treated with antibiotics and then have the ultrasound repeated to see if the mass is still present. If so, I would probably just treat for transitional cell carcinoma which is the most common bladder tumor. You can visit an oncologist for chemo/radiation options. A lot of people just choose to put the dog on piroxicam which is an anti-inflammatory which helps to decrease the inflammation in the tumor but it isn't going to cure the cancer. Also I would put him on a joint supplement like dasuquin to help increase the mucus in the bladder wall which is also a natural anti-inflammatory. I hope this helps!

However it sounds like what you really need to determine exactly what is going on and what type of cancer she has if any would be to pursue further care with an internist or an oncologist. Speak to your veterinarian about a referral to see an internist. Again it’s a bit unusual for a dog this young to develop cancer in the bladder. Cytology is rarely diagnostic for this disease so I would still be suspicious that a malignant tumor such as TCC is much more likely. This is because of what you described but also due to the fact that this is way more common than benign tumors of the bladder. There is a test that your veterinarian could consider which is easy to perform and is non-invasive. This is also very sensitive and specific meaning that typically a negative or a positive result can be trusted. This is called the BRAF test which is performed with a urine sample. Dog has blood in urine, thick bladder, culture negative. Is it infection or cancer?

I would recommend to treat medically before doing any invasive procedure such as tissue biopsy. Inflammatory type of cystitis are common and bladder wall can be often thicker than normal (I should see the ultrasound images though to give you an opinion on that). mAnti-inflammatory medications (i would associate an antibiotic anyway even with negative culture) can be tried before deciding any invasive test. Dog tumor: Is a new mass test needed before treatment or oncologist?

I'm sorry Guinness has a tumor! Yes, it would be a good idea to have a fine needle aspirate (FNA) of the mass between his stomach and bladder. This will help identify if this is malignant or not, and what treatment may need to be done. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform, so it won't be an invasive procedure. I hope this helps!

Why does my dog still have a UTI with no bacteria after treatment?

It may be that Goofy has a bladder stone or has a tumor in his bladder that is an underlying issue. If a bacterial culture hasn't yet been done, that should be considered as well to determine definitively whether or not there is an active infection. Talk to your vet about an X-ray or an abdominal ultrasound to further investigate. While the ALT and globulin are slightly high, they aren't terribly high out of the normal range. Its reasonable to repeat these blood tests in 1-2 weeks and see if the values have normalized. Neither of those bloodwork findings are terribly alarming to me, especially if Goofy isn't showing any symptoms. Follow up with your vet in a week or so to recheck bloodwork and discuss doing X-rays or an ultrasound (sonogram). Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

My young dog has a bladder mass and bloody urine. Is it cancer?

It could be that Chika has urinary stones causing the mass in her bladder and the red color of her urine. Another possibility could be a canine polypoid eosinophilic cystitis, also known as benign inflammatory fibrous polyp. In a year and half old dog, bladder cancer would be rare, so I wouldn't have that at the top of my differential list. I know it's scary, but I try not to get too worried just yet until you have the mass diagnosed. I hope this helps!

What can be done for a dog with an inoperable bladder tumor?

Unfortunately there are not good treatments for transitional cell carcinoma, the most common type of cancer found in the bladder. If the tumor is inoperable then often anti-inflammatory medication like meloxicam is recommended to slow progression of the tumor. Chemotherapy is sometimes an option as well, but would not result in a cure. I'm so sorry for your loss - it sounds like Charlie was loved like a member of the family and you did what you could to keep him comfortable.
