My dog has black scabs, not itchy. Is it a skin infection or allergy?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 62 lbs

I was hoping I could get some advice with this. He is now eating grain free food. I have washed him with a medicated shampoo. I have given him allergy medicine. He has no fleas or parisites. He has all his vaccinations. We have to other dogs that have no issues. I don't know what else I can do for my big boy. Please help. He doesn't seem to be hurting or even itchy. It just looks painful to me. Like little black loose scabs.

Poor Rocko! This looks like it could have a bacterial component and likely an allergy component to it even though he isn't itchy. I would have your vet take a look at him and see if he could benefit from a few weeks, possibly even a month, of oral antibiotics. Your vet can also prescribe him a stronger allergy medicine like apoquel or a short course of steroids to see if this will help. I would continue with the medicated bathe twice a week. I would also add in some omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin E to help heal his coat from the inside out. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon!
