My dog has new black mole-like scars. Are they serious or just scars?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 4 months old | 18.5 lbs

Nani has two black mole/scars on her body, one under her arm which is about an inch wide and another on her groin. The first appeared from scratching too hard and was red, but then over a months time, it became this mole-like scar. The other mole is about 1 cm thick, and appeared about two weeks after the first one.

Hi there and thank you for your post! Judging from the pictures and your description, these skin lesions are likely benign but it would be difficult to rule out if they are cancerous or not based on pictures and a description unfortunately. If the skin was damaged sometimes Scar Tissue can come back as a discolored portion of the skin. So what you may be seeing is scar tissue that is hyperpigmentation. As with any Mass, I typically recommend further testing to help determine what the mask could be. A simple test called a fine needle aspirate can be performed. This test is when the veterinarian inserts a small needle into the mass to obtain cells. These cells are then assessed under a microscope to help better determine what the mass could be. So if you would like to know more what these masses could be, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine them and have a fine needle aspirate done. Anytime a new mass is noticed, I always recommend having it evaluated to see what it is and if anything needs to be done about it. Unfortunately, we often can't tell anything about a mass by just looking at it. Your vet can perform a simple test called a fine needle aspirate where they use a small needle to collect some cells from the mass, then look at them under the microscope. They may even need to send the cells to the lab for a pathologist to examine them, so we know what the mass is. If it is benign, you might not need to do anything about the mass at all, but if they see cells that worry them, they might recommend removing the mass. Since Qbert has scratched the mass, I think it is certainly worth having your veterinarian examine it again and evaluate a sample to make sure that it is benign. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Is it normal if my dog's mole feels firm and hard under her skin?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These can definitely feel firm as they usually do. These could be benign or malignant growths. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My dog has a new, growing blister-like mole on her back. What is it?

I’m not sure if there was supposed to be a photograph attached to your post, but that would be helpful. Red raised masses can be something like infection or an ingrown hair. They can also be more indicative of a skin tumor. Of the skin tumors, most are benign but there is one called a mast cell tumor which is cancerous and needs to be removed quickly. When in doubt, I always recommend to have any type of skin mass examined by the veterinarian. Sometimes they can tell what it is based on exam. But just like with humans, not all skin tumors can be identified just by looking. The doctor may need to aspirate some of the cells to look under the microscope. That is the only way to accurately know what kind of tumor it is. I always recommend to play it safe with something like this! My rescued boxer has non-itchy skin spots. Could they be scars?

The lesions on the belly do look like scars, but I can't tell about the ones on the back without taking a closer look. Sometimes pictures make things look a bit different than they do in person. If they really don't seem to be bothering Joker at all, it is definitely possible they are scars. I recommend monitoring the lesions over the coming weeks. If you notice any changes such as redness, flaking, increasing in size, or if he does become itchy, then definitely get him in to your veterinarian. My dog has round scabs, but they don't seem to bother him. What is it?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Oscar. It is a bit difficult to see the lesions in these photos as they are slightly blurry and there is fur covering the areas, but these could be epidermal collarettes, which are the result of bacterial infection of the skin, often the result of allergies, or potentially ringworm (a fungus) lesions. I would recommend bringing Oscar in to the vet to examine the areas. They may recommend testing by collecting some of the lesion and looking at it under the microscope to see if bacteria or yeast are present, or recommend fungal culture if they feel the lesions are suspicious for ringworm in person.

My dog has skin scabs and a history of MCT. Should I see a vet?

Mast cell tumors are known as "the great pretender" because they can look like just about any type of skin lesion. Knowing Bodhi's history of having a MCT, I would approach him with a bit more caution than another 3 year old dog. The lesions in question don't look like the typical pustule or papule that I'd expect to see with itching and allergies. I'm glad to hear that he isn't bothered by these lesions, but the only definitive way to determine their cause is by taking a sample of cells with a needle (or removing them for a biopsy) for microscopic analysis. While this certainly isn't an emergency situation, I do think you should take Bodhi in for an exam in the next week or so. I hope that everything goes well!

What is this black scab-like lump on my dog's back under the fur?

Lesions like this can be a few things including a healing wound, a skin tumor, an enlarged pore or a keratin horn. If this is a healing wound, you do not want to disturb it or it will delay healing. I recommend to check the area daily for the next 2 weeks. Skin wounds heal in 7-14 days so if the lesion is still present at that point, I recommend to have Lily Kate examined. Starting Lily Kate on an oral omega 3 fatty acid supplement may help to improve the over all condition of her skin but it may not change anything about the lesion. A skin tumor will need an aspirate to determine if it is cancerous or not, the other conditions require medical management or surgical removal to heal them. Make sure to protect the area from any licking or scratching. She may need to wear a shirt or an elizabethan collar (if she can reach the area to lick).
