My dog was bitten by an unvaccinated dog. Is he safe? What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | 8 months and 20 days old | 4 lbs

My dog got bit by unvaccinated street dog an hour ago. I cleaned the wound with antiseptic and will take him to the vet after 4 hours. Is there anything else i can do in the meantime? Is there any serious risk?

If Brownie has had his rabies vaccine, then the main risk is simple infection. You’ve already taken the first step but cleaning the wound and your vet will probably prescribe antibiotics. Other than that, there is not much to worry about.

Best of luck to you and Brownie!
