Why is my Pomeranian puppy biting his back paw with no injury?

Hello, I'm sorry to hear that Sadie is so uncomfortable. Chewing and licking at their paws can be caused by a couple different things. Often times it's an allergy to something that causes irritation and redness. This causes the paws to feel itchy which is why dogs will chew and bite. It could also be that Sadie has been bitten by something which is causing her to feel the itchiness. That typically wouldn't last as long and it wouldn't be affecting all of her paws. Allergies in dogs can be caused by an allergic reaction to something they are eating or by something in their environment. Examples of something in the environment could be laundry detergent, something blooming in the area where they play, or something they're just constantly coming into contact with that is irritating them. At home you can try a mild oatmeal-based shampoo that you can buy at the grocery store. Give Sadie a bath with the shampoo and make sure you let it sit on her skin for about 10 minutes before rinsing. If this does not seem to help I would recommend getting an appointment with your veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have a secondary infection that is causing her to be uncomfortable. I would not advise using any creams for her because licking those off her feet could be dangerous and make her sick. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

It could also be due to an infection or injury to the paws. He should see a vet for this to get it diagnosed and treated. Tonight, try soaking his paws in an Epsom salt bath to see if that helps. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Based on your picture it looks like a rough paw pad and likely not the reason for the chewing. But if that is the only feet and pads that look like that it could be an injury. I would use an E-collar to prevent further licking and chewing. Based on the symptoms that you are describing it is possible that Fozzie could have a cut or foreign material present in his paw or possibly a skin infection. Skin infections can lead to inflammation and irritation of the skin that is often very uncomfortable. Although less likely it is also possible that Fozzie could have a broken bone in his paw. I would recommend having Fozzie seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine the area and look for a possible underlying cause for his symptoms. Depending on their findings they can discuss the need for additional diagnostics/treatments. In the meantime I would prevent Fozzie from licking the area as this can lead to further damage. Poor Baby! Excessive biting or chewing at the paws, tail, or other parts of the body is most often caused by allergies, but could also be due to other skin problems such as a bacterial or fungal skin infection, fleas, or skin mites (mange). Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking her to the vet tomorrow for an exam. He/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it. In the meantime, if she's making herself bleed, you may need to get an e-collar (plastic cone) for her to wear until you're able to see the vet. This will keep her from continuing to chew on herself and make the skin problem worse.

If he comes inside licking the paw, I worry about an insect bite or sting or something stuck in his paw such as a piece of plant material like you mentioned. If he is just holding the leg up, the pain could be from higher up in the limb. He could have been excited at the veterinary appointment which allows the adrenaline to over ride the pain he is likely experiencing at home. Is it always the same leg? Some puppies will experience lameness that shifts legs as they grow. If no pain was found in his leg, he could be experiencing neck pain. This can radiate down the leg causes referred pain. If it continues, he should be re-evaluated and may need x-rays to determine the cause of his pain. I hope this information helps!
