Why did my well-behaved dog bark at only one specific visitor?

It could be a combination of being fearful/anxious and a bit possessive/protective. Try not to overwhelm her with too many people at once. Gradually acclimate her to one person at a time by exposing her for ever increasing periods of time. Correct any negative response immediately and praise good behavior consistently. Add in a new person as she accepts the previous one. Be patient. This will take time. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may decrease any anxiety she may have.

What you're describing sounds like a reaction to the general excitement level and maybe the volume in the room. Some dogs will actually become aggressive that type of situation (for example, they will bite ONLY when there's a touchdown -- not so fun for the visitors). As far as stopping it, keeping her a quiet separate area during big gatherings is one way, as long as she doesn't bark to be reunited with the group. You can also try feeding her a continuous steam of small treats to help change her emotional reaction to these events. One thing to avoid is any yelling or punishment, since that may push her over the edge from barking to aggression

Poor Conan! It could just have been that he wasn't expecting someone to be in the house and it startled him. Sometimes, dogs can also be fearful of people who may be "different" IE wearing hats, glasses, a different color shirt than normal, etc. Working on socialization can help with this. The next time Jon comes by, having Jon simply toss treats in Conan's direction, without interacting, can help the two of them get used to each other. If Conan approaches or permits attention, extra treas and praise can help teach him this is a good thing! This socialization technique can be used with anyone new in the house, or even out and about as well.

They can be nervous or scared, protective of their families, excited in general, curious, etc. Lack of structure and exercise can make them more nervous as well. Some dogs respond to you teaching them a "bark" or "speak" command in a very quiet setting when there isn't anything making them bark. This shows them that you will tell them when it's time to be vocal. You can also try crating her in a kennel when people come over. Once everyone arrives you can let her out to socialize. The kennel isn't for punishment, but just her private, comfortable area where he can feel secure when the stressful situation occurs. Placing her in the kennel in a separate room can also help break her of the barking if you just let him "bark it out" without yelling or responding to her until she is quiet. Desensitizing to the stimulus can be helpful too. I am including a link that I think has some good information about how to help with the barking behavior. However, please keep in mind that any aggression like growling, snarling, biting, or lunging at other dogs or people, should be taken seriously, and I would not continue to try training without a professional. If your husband was wearing a hat or clothes that scared Lacey, this could prompt her to develop a fear of him. If she is adopted, maybe she had a previous experience that was recently triggered by something your husband did (loud noise, etc.). I would recommend having your husband walk her regularly, give her lots of treats and make her do tricks for them, etc. Have him spend more time with her and if the behavior does not correct itself, I would maybe have her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This dog is probably threatening to Bella for some reason. It may be intact (and if in heat possibly a female). Since she doesn't do this to other dogs/people walking by, it has to be something specific to that dog. I would trust Bella's instinct about the dog and avoid any interaction with it if at all possible. Sometimes growling can be more of a warning and then Bella would likely start barking if the dog approached or got any closer. When you notice this behavior, try to distract Bella away from it by offering her a toy to play with or a treat. This way she does not become too hung up on the possible 'threat'. Continue to monitor Bella's behavior. If she starts doing it to other dogs or people she may be developing aggressive tendencies. I hope this helps.
