Why does my dog back away from water but still want to drink?

No need to apologize! Thank you for posting more information :-) It's certainly interesting that he won't drink from the bowl of cool water or out of a training water bottle. As I'm sure you know, it's very important that your puppy drinks water for hydration and his health. It could be that he's drinking water when you aren't looking, and you can measure how much water you put in the bowl in the morning. The next morning, measure the water left so that you can see if he has been drinking water or not. He may not like the temperature of the water, as dogs can be more sensitive to temperatures than humans, so you can try to leave out room temperature water to see if he will drink that. He may not like the bowl, it could be too high for him to drink out of, so you can try a more shallow bowl. You could consider getting a water fountain for him. I have one of those for my dogs and cats, and they love it. Finally, you can mix in some wet puppy food with his dry food, which will get more moisture into his diet, or you can soak his dry food with warm water. If the methods I suggested above do not get him to drink water, or the water measurements you take show he isn't drinking water, then I would have him seen by a vet for a health check.

This depends on a lot of factors including if she is otherwise exhibiting any symptoms of sickness, if she is eating canned food which already has water in it, how much water she is actually having, among other things. If she is not drinking anything especially if having other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and/or lethargy, she should be evaluated as soon as possible to prevent dehydration and to investigate the cause. If she is otherwise doing well and is eating canned food, it would be ok to monitor her for another 12-24 hours and if not improved to have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. A good way to increase water consumption is to give canned food. That said, Nico may be taking enough for his needs on a regular basis. Assuming he is alert, happy, energetic, has soft stool, he might be just fine. A visit to your regular veterinarian would confirm he is ok or if there is an issue to work on. A dog may stop eating for a wide variety of reasons, some of which are due to medical conditions and others that may be more behavioral. Medical problems such as gastrointestinal viruses, intestinal obstructions, parasites, or kidney disease, among other conditions, can lead to this problem. Other dogs may become disinterested in their food and may prefer a different flavor of food, or the taste of the food may have changed due to the container in which it is stored. If your dog is still active and playful, you can try to tempt them to eat with a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually transitioning back to either their original diet or to a new food. (Any time you change diets, be sure to do so gradually by mixing the old and new foods together over 5-7 days.) If this is unsuccessful or if your dog is lethargic, vomiting, or having diarrhea, a visit to the veterinarian is in order. The veterinarian will be able to perform a physical exam as well as any necessary diagnostic tests to try to get to the bottom of this issue so that proper treatment can be started.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. Wet food has a very high moisture content. So dogs eating this type of food drink less water than when eating kibble. If he is exercising less, this will cause him to drink less as well. As long as he is eating and acting normal, then you do not likely need to be concerned. Excessive water intake can be seen with conditions such as urinary tract infections, and metabolic conditions such as Cushing's disease to name a few. Given that Chico is also showing signs of being hungry, it is possible that he has something called Cushing's disease which is a metabolic condition which at times requires treatment. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian who can test for that if it makes sense based on further history and physical examination. Good luck!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can try and add in chicken broth to the water to see if this entices Miaya more to drink water. You will have to regularly change the water as the broth will spoil. I would change it out every 3 hours if you are going to do this.
