Could my 8-month-old dog's back leg limp be hip problems or a strain?

Pet's info: Dog | Irish Setter | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 21 days old | 16 lbs

I have an 8 month old Irish setter. And she is limping on her back right leg. She runs out side fine. But when she walks she some times hop on it. And time when she’s resting when she get up she will whine. Could this be hip problems or just leg?

There could be a couple of reasons why Penny is limping. She could have strained or torn a ligament, or she could have a problem with her back or hips. I recommend resting Penny for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she is still limping or appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck.

I'm sorry to hear about Penny. If she had a lot more activity than usual today, it could be possible that she is just a bit sore and pulled a muscle which is causing some discomfort. Keeping her quiet, on bed-rest with leashed-only potty breaks and preventing her from jumping up on things may help resolve any minor soreness or issues. If the limping doesn't resolve, or seems to worsen, then it would be best to find a vet that can take a look and rule out issues such as sprains, breaks, torn ligaments, etc which can also cause similar signs.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Penny. I am glad that she will see a veterinarian. An exam will be performed to try to isolate the source of her pain. She could have sustained a soft tissue injury such as a muscle strain. Sometime neck pain can even radiate down a limb and cause lameness. If a bone or joint seems painful, x-rays may be recommended to look for a small fracture, arthritis or another problem. If x-rays are not affordable for you at this time, veterinary prescription medications can be sent home for her. These will be more effective than aspirin. In the meantime, keep her quiet to allow her body to rest. I hope this information helps!

Poor Lily. When a pet isn't showing a pain response but limping on their back leg, it could indicate that they have either torn a ligament in the joint or have a severe muscle sprain. Also if you don't notice any obvious swelling, then a fracture is likely not the cause. Rest her, no running, jumping playing and leash walk only for the next couple of weeks. Some causes of hindlimb lameness in growing dogs that are less than 12 months of age include: Hip dysplasia, Avascular necrosis of the femoral head - Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, where the ball of the thighbone in the hip doesn't get enough blood, causing the bone to die Osteochondritis of stifle - fragments of cartilage or bone have become loose within the knee joint Patella luxation - medial or lateral disorder, in which the kneecap dislocates or moves out of its normal location Osteochondritis of the hock - fragments of cartilage or bone have become loose within the hock, the joint of the hind leg Panosteitis – inflammation of the bones Hypertrophic osteodystrophy - a disease characterized by decreased blood flow to the part of the bone adjacent to the joint Trauma to the soft tissue, bone, or joint Infection – may be local, or generalized (systemic) Nutritional imbalances Congenital abnormalities (present at birth) If the lameness persists, even if she seems better afterward, I recommend getting her seen by your vet as soon as possible to check for one of these conditions and get her started on treatment if need be.

Why is my 9-month-old puppy limping on her front leg but still active?

Since Kilba can't talk, only a physical exam will be able to determine the source of the lameness. Just like people, the pain/limping can be related to many causes including a ligament tears, soft tissue injury, a developmental abnormality or even a spinal issue. You may try strict rest for a few days (no walks, running, jumping or stairs). If Kilba does not improve, have her examined by the veterinarian. She may need radiographs and the doctor will determine this based on the exam. I hope she starts feeling better quickly.
