My dog's back leg is lifted after being outside. Is it an injury?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

My dog was outside and , I went to let her in and get back right foot was lifted up to her side, she lets me feel on it and she hasn't helped but it's day 3 and she has lowered it a little bit. She is also in heat so I didn't know if that could have anything to do with it. She is eating and drinking so no problems there

It sounds like Diamond has a very sore back leg if she hasn't beared significant weight on it in 3 days. It is unlikely that it is related to her heat cycle. Start by checking her paw on the affected limb to make sure there isn't something stuck in between or under her toes (thorn, plant and, etc). If there isn't something that can be easily removed, then she should see her veterinarian. In the meantime, give her strict rest (no running, jumping or playing and limit stairs). She will likely need an x- ray of the painful area on that leg. In the hind limb, knee or hip pain are most common, but some dogs will experience lower back pain. Good luck and I hope Diamond is feeling better soon!
