Dog hurt back jumping. Can I give pain meds before seeing a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 16 lbs

Hello, my little dachshund jumped off the bed approx. week ago. She has hurt herself and I'm hoping it's a pulled muscle not her spine. When I run my hand along her left side she draws her skin up, but not when I run down her spine. She cannot jump on couch but is walking, using bathroom. She did jump up on my legs this morning which is an improvement. Does this sound like hopefully it's not her spine? I plan to take her to vet but should I give her something for pain/inflammation? She is 8-10y

Unfortunately, there are no safe OTC pain relievers for dogs. Many are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Taking Lilly to the vet is the right thing to do, and the vet can prescribe her a safe pain and inflammation reliever, such a Rimadyl.
