My Pomeranian ate string. How can I help him pass it safely?

Induction of vomiting is only helpful if it is within a couple hours or if it is in the stomach and hasn't passed. At this time, I would not recommend induction of vomiting. I would take Rocket in to the vet for x-rays and/or ultrasound which will help determine if there is something still in the stomach or provide a baseline to be used for comparison should he start to feel sick. Watch him closely over the next few days for lethargy, decreased appetite, gagging, or vomiting, which would warrant immediate vet attention.

This is because hydrogen peroxide can and does cause gastritis and esophagitis, often worse than the initial problem. You can take her into an ER vet now, and they can safely induce vomiting with a shot. Otherwise, it may pass without problem, and you can watch her. If you see any vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy, that is an indication there may be an obstruction from the anklet, and she will have to see a vet immediately. I would recommend feeding canned pumpkin and bread to Maggie to help pass the string through. If you notice that she is vomiting, lethargic or not eating then I would get her in to be seen by a veterinarian and have x-rays taken to help determine if the rope is causing an intestinal obstruction. I would recommend monitoring for any signs of trouble. This likely will pass on its own since it is so small and pliable. If he starts vomiting (both food and water), has a decreased appetite, becomes lethargic and has little to no stool production, then it is best to get him seen by your vet for a possible issue. However, he will likely be just fine and will pass this out in his stool. Yes you are right that he is still susceptible to getting parvovirus until 1 week after his last set of vaccinations, which is usually between 14-16 weeks of age. It can take up to 72 hours or longer for this string to pass. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to get it to pass, it either will or it won't. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy, then I would take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Hello. Puppies will swallow small sticks with no problems, but you can help them to pass by lubricating her gut. Feeding bread is good, but I like to smear the bread with some Vaseline & feed Lilly this. In addition, you can feed her 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) twice a day for the next few days. If she does not have any problems over the next 2-3 days, like vomiting, diarrhea ( some soft stool will be normal from the Vaseline & pumpkin ), or she quits eating, then she will be fine. However, it is important to watch closely for clinical signs consistent with an intestinal obstruction such as vomiting, abdominal pain and decreased appetite.
