My dog ate a sleeping pill. Is Zolpidem toxic? What should I do?

If your dog did ingest just one pill she will probably be ok. There are not a lot of studies of ambien usage in dogs but it has been found that it can cause "paradoxical excitation" which means instead of calling your dog it may make her more energetic and excitable. This side effect should go away once the drug is out of her system. If she is still acting abnormal in about 12-24 hours then you should take her in to the vet to be evaluated.

This is a potentially toxic dose and I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian. Alprazolam (Xanax) can cause sedation and disorientation or hyperexcitability. At high doses it can effect the blood pressure or lead to muscle tremors. I'm not sure if there was a typo perhaps? Also, please let us know the milligrams of the mediation and about how many there were. We can better advise you then! The other option would be for you to call the ASPCA poison control center with that information. They will be able to give you a very clear, very definitive knowledge of whether or not this is problematic, what to expect, and whether or not to go to the vet. Since its been 12 hours, there's really not going to be a benefit to inducing vomiting, as the pills would have already gone through her stomach. Pramipexole (Mirapex) has a narrow margin of safety in dogs. Nina ingested about 0.02mg/kg. At 0.03mg/kg, you may see vomiting. At doses of .06mg/kg and above, more serious symptoms, such as ataxia (wobbly gait), tremors and increased heart rate are seen. Onset of symptoms is within 90 minutes of ingestion. To be safe, you can have Nuna seen at the nearest veterinary ER. Vomiting can be induced via injection to get the pill out if it has been less than 90 minutes. Activated charcoal may be given afterwards to further reduce absorption. Supportive care may be administered as indicated and she may need to stay for observation. Abilify can cause low blood pressure, sleepiness, and depression or lethargy - but it has not been shown to be a highly toxic drug, thankfully. If the ingestion occurred right now you can try to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. The dose is 1cc per pound of body weight. If the ingestion happened several hours ago, there is likely to be no benefit in inducing vomiting - rather, a veterinarian would only be able to manage any symptoms that were noted. In general a dose of 50 milligrams (mg) of xylitol per pound of body weight (which is 100mg/kg) considered toxic. Xylitol will cause rapid release of insulin which causes a rapid and profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that occurs within 10-60 minutes of eating the xylitol. Untreated, this hypoglycemia can be life-threatening. Signs of hypoglycemia may include: vomiting, weakness, lack of coordination, difficulty walking or standing, lethargy, tremors, seizures and coma. If your dog ate toxic amount take him to the vet ASAP, if not yet showing signs induction of vomiting may be done and if there are signs he will need immediate treatment.
