My dog ate a rope toy. Should I induce vomiting or call the vet?

This is because hydrogen peroxide can and does cause gastritis and esophagitis, often worse than the initial problem. You can take her into an ER vet now, and they can safely induce vomiting with a shot. Otherwise, it may pass without problem, and you can watch her. If you see any vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy, that is an indication there may be an obstruction from the anklet, and she will have to see a vet immediately. Should she develop an obstruction, surgery will be needed to correct it. I hope this helps, best of luck.

I never recommend including vomiting at home because the substance used at home causes esophagitis and gastritis, often worse than the initial problem. Plus, the shoe could become stuck in his esophagus, leading to a very serious situation. You can take him into a vet now to have vomiting safely induced with a shot, or you can chose to monitor him. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his poop, anorexia, or lethargy, he should see a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Honey is very cute! If she chewed up the arm in to pieces she will likely be fine. If she swallowed it whole then it could pass in her stool, she could vomit it up on her own or it could becomes stuck and cause a blockage. It is best, if swallowed whole and it just happened, to take her to the Vet right away and have them induce vomiting. We do not recommend hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. Signs of a blockage are vomiting, not eating and lethargy. I hope this helps!

Induction of vomiting is only helpful if it is within a couple hours or if it is in the stomach and hasn't passed. At this time, I would not recommend induction of vomiting. I would take Rocket in to the vet for x-rays and/or ultrasound which will help determine if there is something still in the stomach or provide a baseline to be used for comparison should he start to feel sick. Watch him closely over the next few days for lethargy, decreased appetite, gagging, or vomiting, which would warrant immediate vet attention.

If it has been under 2 hours since he ate the small stuffed animal, I would recommend inducing vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. You can give 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds, so if Barney weighs about 70 pounds, this would be 7 teaspoons. You can use a turkey baster to get it in his mouth. If he doesn’t vomit within 15 minutes, you can give him another 4 teaspoons and see if this works. Do not give any more than this total amount. If he still does not vomit, I recommend bringing him to a veterinarian who can use injectable medication to induce vomiting. The biggest concern with ingestion of a toy is an intestinal obstruction or blockage, which is a surgical emergency. If you cannot get him to a veterinarian now, I recommend watching for signs of obstruction including vomiting, lethargy, decreased appetite, drooling, etc. If you see these signs, he should be seen, and your vet may recommend x rays to look for evidence of an intestinal blockage. Also, monitor his feces for the next 1-3 days to look for the toy. I hope this is helpful!

More than likely it is in the process of moving through the gut, or it has already passed unnoticed in the stool. If Marsha is still eating, & there is no vomiting or diarrhea, then I would continue to watch for any difficulties. Feeding her a bland diet of 25% boiled chicken or beef and 75% plain, cooked white rice should help to move the material through. If all is well after 3 days of the diet, then I would be surprised if any further issues develop. But any concerns, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thank you.

You will need to call your Vet for instructions to induce vomiting. Hydrogen peroxide causes vomiting by irritating the stomach lining and can cause inflammation of the esophagus. We can't prescribe dosing of hydrogen peroxide on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
