My dog ate plastic buttons and metal trim. Does he need a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 55 lbs

I believe my dog might have eaten 4 plastic buttons and a metal trim or a coat. He's usually alone when I'm at work and I think he reached for the coat and bit the buttons and trim off. He's not displaying any signs of feeling sick or in pain. What should I do?

These foreign bodies can certainly cause gastrointestinal inflammation and possibly complete or partial obstructions.
A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Possibly further investigations (like abdominal imaging as ultrasound or radiographs) may be needed.
