My dog ate a meat absorbent pad. Will he pass it? Should I worry?

Dexter will probably be able to pass the absorbent pad that is under a piece of raw meat. If he ingested pieces of styrofoam you may want to contact your veterinarian about inducing vomiting which could be successful if done in the next hour or so. Otherwise I'd recommend watching him for a decrease in appetite, vomiting or diarrhea which could be signs of obstruction or gastroenteritis from the raw meat.

This should pass. He obviously likes the feel of chewing on the pads. However you really need to lock the pads away so he cannot access them as they can cause an obstruction when ingested. Monitor KD for diarrhea and vomiting/retching during the next week and should this occur, take him to a veterinarian to check for an intestinal obstruction. I doubt he will get one from such a small piece, however you never know.

That's a tough one. Simba is so tiny, so a palm size sheet of plastic could possibly cause an obstruction or could pass through in the stool. Your options are to wait and hope it passes, but take him to the vet if he starts vomiting or having a decreased appetite or energy level for x-rays and possible emergency surgery. OR, you take him to an emergency clinic now that has an endoscope and see if they can remove it (which would still require general anesthesia and may not be successful because the plastic may just fall apart when they try to pull it out). There's not a clear right answer here because their are risks with both options. I'd give him a 50-70% chance of passing it on his own. Some dogs can pass the oddest and largest items you would never imagine, others have a harder time. All you can do is monitor for any vomiting or blood diarrhea. The ones that seem to pass these have no symptoms at all and you may or may not even see them pass it out. If vomiting starts with weight loss or no appetite, then I would get her checked to see if any are obstructed. Usually this only take 24-48 hours to monitor

I remember your question from yesterday. It can take up to 72 hours for this plastic piece to pass, so I wouldn't be too worried just yet. As long as he is acting normal, there isn't a cause for concern. Keep checking his feces over the next couple of days, and if you don't see it, then take him into the vet. As I said yesterday, if Hachi stops eating, starts vomiting, has diarrhea, and/or becomes very lethargic, then rush him into a vet immediately. I hope this helps set your mind at ease!

Thanks for your question. It sounds like you have a naughty boy on your hands. At this point, it sounds like he isn't currently having symptoms. If he stops eating or starts vomiting, you will want to seek veterinary attention. Unfortunately, there are some dogs that are repeat offenders and continue to get themselves into trouble. If not already, he may need to be crated when alone, with nothing but a metal water bowl in the crate with him. I hope it makes it through this and stays out of trouble for a while.

Often times, paper towels will pass through without a problem - especially if Max chewed it into pieces before eating it. But there is always a chance that it could cause a blockage. You will need to monitor him closely for the next 2-3 days for any signs of a problem - if he begins vomiting, acting lethargic, or doesn't want to eat, then you need to take him to a vet right away for x-rays and possible surgery if a blockage is found. As long as he is acting normal, I wouldn't worry - you can keep an eye out for pieces of the paper towel to pass in his stool.
