My dog ate food with worms. Is it harmful without a vet nearby?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yuck! Well if Maxie ate any of it she will likely vomit. If she is acting fine I wouldn't worry. If she vomits fast her for 12 hours and start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. He will not be the first nor the last dog to eat a rotten carcass or meat. I wish you the best!

Yes, those are probably grain mites you are seeing. This is usually due to improper storage of the food item. Grain mites should not cause serious illnesses if eaten, but some pets might have an allergic reaction to them that could include itching, and intestinal and skin problems; possible but not likely to happen. I would not be worried about this. Just throw the treats away and follow the guidelines below to help prevent this from happening again. * Store pet foods in airtight containers. * Don't store food in garages, sheds or basements. * Immediately throw bags away outside after the food has been put into a container. * Don't buy or use old or outdated food. * Wash food dishes frequently in hot water and dry thoroughly. * Buy only 30 days worth of food at a time. * Don't purchase food in bags with holes or tears. * Avoid low quality food with a lot of debris in the bottom of the bag (ALPO would be one of the lower quality foods). Roundworms and stomach worms are possible and can cause a significant amount of damage if left untreated. Additionally, roundworms are zoonotic meaning people can contract them through infestation with their larvae, necessitating treatment. As long as she isn't acting sick, just make an appointment to have her examined by a veterinarian within a few days and a fecal examination performed to determine what kind of worms they are and what the best medication is to treat Diamond for them. If she starts showing signs of illness, have her seen as soon as you can. Hope this helps!

Parasites are sometimes a part of pet ownership, so as long as everyone remembers to wash their hands after playing with Billy, & especially before eating, all will be fine. It was a good idea to crate him until a fecal analysis can be done, but once the appropriate wormer is given you can relax. Take care.

You should not feed your dog food that has worms in it. This would be a sign of decay, which could give your dog food poisoning. Please get fresh food for him (Kibble or canned). I would not eat this contaminated food either. Give him some boiled rice and boiled chicken today instead and observe him if he is still off-color tomorrow, then please take him to a veterinarian for an exam.

The most likely diseases are as follows: 1. Parvo, a virus that primarily attacks the immune system and intestines of dogs and is very lethal if left without supportive care. 2. Intestinal parasites which can cause intestinal blockage and even anemia (depletion of red blood cells). 3. Other viruses with varying severities. This is not an exhaustive list, just the most common things for a puppy. They will all lead to dehydration and other secondary issues which can all be severe enough to cause death. Whatever the underlying disease, he looks very ill and needs attention from a veterinarian immediately. I would recommend taking him to your nearest emergency veterinary hospital as soon as possible.
