My puppy ate Colgate toothpaste. Is it safe for dogs to eat?

The amount that Cody ingested is not likely to cause any abnormal side effects related to fluoride toxicity. I would monitor Cody for signs of lethargy, trembling, inappetance, seizures, restlessness, labored breathing or diarrhea and if these signs develop, take Cody in to be seen by a veterinarian immediately. Hello. Human toothpaste contains a lot of soap, especially like what is found in shampoo. That is why we spit it out. If this was only a one time ingestion, Nanny will probably be fine. She may have some GI upset such as vomiting & diarrhea, but it should be self limiting. If you have been using people toothpaste on her, stop & start using a dog only version. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This particular toothpaste in general does not contain xylitol which is the concerning ingredient sometimes found in some toothpastes. I recommend you double check that this is not an ingredient of the specific crest toothpaste variant you may have. If xylitol is not part of it then she is likely going to be just fine though some dogs may get some stomach upset. If it does in fact have xylitol then she would have to be evaluated right away as that would be a medical emergency as that can cause liver toxicity and seizures. Good luck and have a good night!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Colgate can contain a product called xylitol. This causes the blood sugar to drop drastically. If your dog is weak and not moving, please get honey or corn syrup and rub it on her gums right away. You then need to get her into a vet clinic as soon as possible. Large volumes of toothpaste (xylitol) can also cause liver damage. Best of luck with Lili.

Most dog toothpastes are made to be safe to ingest because we just can’t trust a dog not to swallow the toothpastes! Unless the label specifically says not to ingest the toothpaste I don’t think there is a concern with what you are doing, though without the action of brushing the teeth you won’t get the full effect of the toothpaste, but it sounds like brushing just might not work out for Gracie! Not all dogs tolerate it. You could try a different canine toothpaste just in case she prefers another. I recommend the CET brand toothpaste for dogs. Best of luck!

The fluoride in tooth paste can be toxic. If the vomiting persist and he seems like he is getting weak,I would take him for medication to prevent further vomiting and to make sure he isn't getting dehydrated.

Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach. You are likely to get better compliance from Joshie if you use commercial toothpaste made for dogs as it is flavored and dogs actually like it. If you don't make it taste good she will probably not be too happy with the brushing procedure. What is bad for dogs in human toothpaste is the flouride. So, esentially you can use human children's toothpaste as it does not contain flouride. She probably won't like those flavors either though. You can make your own toothpaste if you want to. Baking soda is not toxic to dogs and should be fine to use. Do not use hydrogen peroxide as that will cause vomiting if she swallows too much of it.
