My dog ate a chicken bone. Should I give him Vaseline and bread?

This is a very good question. If Charley isn't choking or otherwise showing signs of distress, you can try just feeding several pieces of plain white bread. They may help bulk up the contents of his gastrointestinal tract and reduce the chance of any chicken bone shards from irritating the tissues there. If you notice vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, straining to defecate, lethargy, or decreased appetite, please have Charley seen by a vet immediately, as that could indicate the chicken bone is causing a problem, and he may need medical or surgical intervention.

Keep an eye on Dobby. As long as he's keeping his food down, keep feeding him and offering him plenty of water. Give him half a slice of whole wheat bread with each meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bones, and cushion them as they pass through the GI tract. If he continues vomiting, there is blood in his vomit or feces, he becomes lethargic, and/or he stops eating, he needs to see a vet immediately. In that case, find an ER vet or a vet on call. Unfortunately after a chicken bone is eating, there's nothing that can be done. It's not recommended to induce vomiting, as the bone can get stuck in the esophagus or cause trauma to it. I would monitor Apollo for sign of obstruction and damage to the intestinal tract, which include vomiting, diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, constipation, vomiting blood, and lethargy. Should you see any of those signs, you will need to take Apollo into a vet immediately. The bones typically pass but depending on how well they were chewed and broken. The larger pieces may cause an obstruction while the smaller ones can cause inflammation and bloody diarrhea. You should watch for vomiting and diarrhea, with blood. if that is noted, then I would have your vet check him to make sure things are passing normally and he doesn't require hospitalization or assists.

Bones can dissolve in the stomach with enough time. It sounds like Kyro had a bout of pancreatitis that caused the vomiting and diarrhea. If Kyro is now acting normal, I would continue to feed the bland diet and see what happens. It may take a day or two for there to be enough food ingested to create solid poop. If he stops eating, starts vomiting again, or seems lethargic, he should be re-examined by a vet.

Unfortunately whenan object becomes lodged in the intestines and nothing is passing through it, then nothing given by mouth will reach theforeign object because the intestinals go through a process called lieus, where nothing is moving. Therefore the only fix in that situation is surgical removal of the foreign object. You know that your pet is expereincing ileus if they are excessively vomiting (even water), forming little to no stools, are extremely lethargic, and dilated loops of intestines are seen on their abdominal radiograph. If it is a partial obstruction, then you can try feeding your pet 1/2-1 slice of high fiber bread and taking them on short 30 minute brisk walks twice a day to encourage GI motility. No oral oils are recommended because of the high risk of aspiration pneumonia. Oils don’t go down the mouth very well in dogs. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry that Ollies is having this problem. Ingesting bones is a very serious issue.... It is likely that the bones are scraping the lining of the large colon which is why you are seeing drops of blood. I don't think that performing an enema would assist in removing any of the bones. There may have been an impaction of stool that they cleared but I highly doubt any bones actually came out. Bones either have to be surgically removed or passed out through regular defecation. Were any x-rays taken to see where the bones were in the GI tract and how many? If not, I suggest you have that done so you know if you have to be worried about any bone remnants or not. This can be extremely serious as any sharp points on the bones could puncture the intestinal lining causing serious peritonitis and possibly death. If he is otherwise acting normally, don't be overly concerned about the blood drops. If he is eating OK I would feed him a couple slices of bread every 8-12 hours to help coat any bone fragments and help push them out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
