My dog has arthritis. Can she still run and climb stairs safely?

In senior dogs, arthritis is common and that could be causing Poppy's reluctance to climb the stairs. It may be painful for her. I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose if she is suffering from arthritis, and can give her some pain meds for it. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. I also recommend giving her glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjuction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from her symptoms. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Hello. I would definitely start Lonnie on a good glucosamine supplement like Dasuquin made by Nutramax. Adding a fish oil to her diet can reduce inflammation ( I like Nordic Naturals ), too. Do talk to your vet about adding an anti-inflammatory medication to make her comfortable, & possibly even Adequan injections to help maintain healthy, lubricated joints. I am a bit worried if she is on cartrophen shots. This is normally only given to dogs with more advanced signs of arthritis. If she currently has signs of arthritis, then it may not be possible to get her running without causing serious damage. In either case it's best to have your vet evaluate Daisy and advise you if this will be feasible for her current condition. Otherwise, even in the face of arthritis, some activity is better than none. If she doesn't have signs of arthritis, then it would still be best for your vet to advise you, but it's definitely reasonable to assume that you can work her up to running 2-3 km per day. Poor girl. Considering her age she likely has some arthritis setting in her joints. Sometimes joint supplements (ie Dasuquin or Cosequin) can help with pain if it is mild-moderate. However for immediate help with her pain your vet can prescribe some anti-inflammatory (Rimadyl or Meloxicam) and pain medicine (Tramadol) to help with Nila’s comfort. Also the vet will want to check her organs (liver, kidneys, etc) to ensure they are also fine. Best of luck with Nila and I hope she feels better soon. Take care.

You will need to take her to the vet to get it checked first, the vet will identify the problem, if it is quite severe she will need anti inflamatories/pain killers, probably permanently- these pain killer are specific to dogs and prescription only.

Arthritis is definitely a possibility. You could start him on a joint supplement, like Dasuquin and see if that helps. Your vet could also take an x-ray to evaluate for arthritis and then start him on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, like Deramaxx, Previcox, Rimadyl, etc. NSAIDs help relieve the discomfort associated with arthritis.

Also, I would recommend a joint supplement if you have not already.
