Is it okay for my dog to take Apoquel and Piriton together long-term?

The drug information for Apoquel states that no specific drug interactions have been reported. From Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook: "Marketing information from the drug sponsor states that oclacitinib has been safely used in conjunction with other common medications including vaccines, NSAIDs, antibiotics, parasiticides, anticonvulsants, and allergen immunotherapy (Anon 2013b), but this information could not be found on the drug label." I would be ok with using these two medications together with that information.

It can be used as a long term solution for allergies, but only your vet can make the determination if that is safe for Purdie to take indefinitely. Without seeing her in person, I can't tell you to do this as it's illegal for me to say that. I recommend having her seen by your vet to discuss a safe and appropriate length of time to give her piriton. You can also discuss other medications used for dog allergies such as Apoquel, which is safe to give long term and extremely effective for allergies. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, it appears to be. We have to keep allergic dogs on it longterm as it improves their quality of life so much. You can always use it on an as needed basis as there will be times of the year perhaps winter when his allergies will not be as significant. Good luck and have a great day!

I have several patients that have been on it for a little over a year now and seem to be doing quite well on it. The one thing we routinely monitor is a complete blood count to make sure the immune system is not being suppressed, which Apoquel has been known to do in some patients. Other than that, I really do not see any other side effects of using Apoquel. I hope this helps! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes. Benedryl can be safely used in conjunction with apoquel. But please give her vet a call to discuss her medications- they may want to increase her apoquel dose or switch to a different medication if it isn’t effective currently.

For that reason, I would have you checked with your prescribing veterinarian to ensure they are ok with that as they know Poppy’s medical history. Have a great day!

I'm not sure anyone can answer that question and the best thing to do is to call the manufacturer of Apoquel and talk with their veterinary consultant team. I'm not sure we have any long term studies on this drug in dogs. These can include medicated bathing, fish oil, antihistamines, corticosteroids, allergy shots, etc. Good luck with Tiny. Allergies can be very challenging but with good care they can be controlled quite well. Also a good flea and tick medicine should be part of the overall treatment.
