Why is my dog so anxious, restless, and won't calm down for hours?

This is highly suspicious of a toxin ingestion, especially if this behavior started all of a sudden. Please take your pet to your local vet right away to have him thoroughly checked. He likely ingested something that is affecting his nervous system. If he is a typical anxious dog, then another explanation here is that he got spooked by something. You can ask your vet for some suggestions to treat his anxiety. Medication + behavioral modification training with a certified animal behaviorist are the best options for treating anxiety in pets. Your pup could have impacted anal sacs, intestinal worms, back pain, or hip pain among other causes leading to these symptoms. He does sound very uncomfortable based on your description, and based on that, I would have him seen by an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and can treat him for them.

Poor Moose. It sounds like he may be in pain or anxious about something. I would have your vet take a look at him to ensure he isn't having any neck or back pain and to ensure that his abdomen also isn't painful. Your vet will be able to do an thorough exam to determine whether it is pain or anxiety and give him the proper meds to help him feel better. I do not recommend giving any human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!

Hi. It would definitely be helpful to have a little more information about her age and breed and her location. But I will help as much as possible with the information we have. She is showing signs of being uncomfortable. This can be due to pain or inflammation somewhere. A lot of times with the signs that you are describing, I find pets will have an anal gland problem. This is where their anal glands, which are their scent glands, become full and irritated and cause the pets to become uncomfortable if they can't get them to express. The other common finding in these situations is pain somewhere. The only way to get down to the bottom of it is to schedule an examination with your veterinarian. They will then be able to help guide what could be causing this problem for her. I also recommend that they check her anal glands. If only Cookie could talk! It’s impossible to know if this related to pain or anxiety. I recommend to play it safe and have Cookie examined by her veterinarian today. Make sure they check her neck, spine and anal glands. The doctor may also want to check her for a urinary tract infection as well. It’s best to play it safe.

If Ana is still continuing this behavior, I recommend to have her seen by her veterinarian. Toxin exposure, severe abdominal pain, or perhaps a severe anal gland infection could all cause this type of restlessness and discomfort. Sewage can carry toxins. Three things in particular that I would be concerned about- back or abdominal pain and anal gland problems. A common back problem that we see frequently involves the intervertebral discs which are between the vertebrae. This can range from the disc bulging against the spinal cord or a rupture of the disc. Dogs often pace, move cautiously and slowly, seem painful, can't get comfortable for any amount of time, etc. Back problems can also be due to soft tissue problems such as a muscle strain, other inflammation, infection, etc. Abdominal pain can mimic this same presentation even with a lack of clinical signs. This could be due to intestinal cramping, pancreatitis, kidney pain, or problems with any of the organs in the abdomen. I'm mostly suspicious of a back problem. I would advise keeping a very close eye on Bo. If this condition persists, worsens, or other signs develop then I would have him evaluated immediately. If you notice that he is getting weaker, seems uncoordinated, starts walking on the top of his back paws, becomes paralyzed in the rear legs then get him seen immediately. These signs would mean that he is having some significant pressure on his spinal cord. Anal gland problems range from enlargement to inflammation to infection of the glands. Clinical signs are often vague like this. Your vet can gather a history, perform an examination, and then make a diagnostic/treatment plan based on their findings. Possible tests include fecal/blood/urine tests and x-rays to evaluate the spine and abdomen. Anal glands can be emptied if they are found to be enlarged and painful. Treatment would be targeted once a diagnosis is made. Good luck with Bo
