My dog's anal gland area is swollen after removal. Is it infected?

Oh no, poor Firulais! It isn't normal for a dog's anus to be swollen, and it could be caused by intestinal worms or impacted anal sacs. You will see the scabs coming off from his incision, and as long as the incision isn't red, swollen, warm to the touch, or has pus then that it normal. I would have Firulais seen by a vet in the morning to diagnose what is causing his anus to be swollen so he can be treated. If his anal sacs are impacted, the vet can express them for him.

This does look swollen and very angry. There is a possibility that there is infection in the wound. You should take Chip to your vet for a recheck on Monday. I do not think this is an emergency unless your dog runs a fever ( above 103 F) or there is a discharge from the wound.

Occasionally the anal sac may still be inflamed/irritated following the expression which may still result in some discomfort and the urge to itch. Scooting of the hind end can also be due to a superficial itch that may be related to an underlying environmental or parasite (i.e flea) allergy. It is difficult to tell from the picture without being able to palpate the rectum, but I do not see any evidence of overt swelling in the region (the anal sacs sit at 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock position at the anus). If Emma continues to appear irritated you can have her evaluated by her veterinarian to palpate the anal sacs and make sure everything palpates normally.

Poor guy...that does look uncomfortable. It may be infected, but I would suspect a discharge at the incision or a fever, lethargy. It is more likely that this is a scrotal hematoma. These typically do resolve in their own, but it can take weeks. Keep his activity level as low as possible to discourage more swelling, continue the anti inflammatory medication, make sure he cannot bite or lick it by using a “cone” if needed. It can provide some relief if he will allow you to do a cold compress on the area. Try wrapping an ice pack with cloth and apply to the area for 15 minutes..three times daily. I would recommend that you have your dog evaluated by a veterinarian. Possible causes of wounds in the area that you mentioned can be caused by anal gland infection or abscess, perianal fistula, or wounds caused by excessive scooting - which can be caused by intestinal parasites or allergies (fleas, food, environmental, etc). Until you can have your dog evaluated by a vet, it may need to wear an e-collar or cone to prevent licking these areas. Licking will spread bacteria and delay healing.

Poor smith. I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian to have the glands examined. A warm compress is a great idea but if they are infected smith will need antibiotics to help the swelling resolve. If infected anal glands are not addressed they can ruptured. Also sometimes based on the age of smith. Inflamed gland could be secondary to a mass, recital or prostate issue hope that helps

I am sorry to hear that! It may be that the infection is still going on - you may need a longer course of the antibiotic or perhaps a different one. I would recommend having them expressed again to see if there is still debris present. I would also want to double check and make sure there is not a mass present in the area:( You can ask for a biopsy to be done if the lump seems unrelated to the infection.
